Abstract
Indigenous people's right is one of the most dominant issues of indigenous peoples' social movements in Nepalese politics, especially after the democratic transformation of 1990More than 59 Indigenous peoples 358 percent of the total population have been struggling under their umbrella organization -Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities NEFIN, for securing their rights in the constitution Tamang, the third largest indigenous peoples in Nepal, has been fighting under their national organization -Nepal Tamang Ghedung Indigenous peoples' movement in Nepal has been studied by several scholars through the identity formation politics framework Similarly, socio-cultural aspects of Tamang indigenous peoples have been studied by some anthropologistsHowever, Tamang Ghedung's movement has not yet been studied through the indigenous rights movement perspectives under the social movement frameworkThis study attempts to fulfill that research gap in Nepalese academia. The activism of Ghedung is analyzed under the political process theory of social movement background, and its demands are diagnosed with the reflection of indigenous peoples' rights enshrined in the international human rights instruments laws. Adopting the case study approach of analyzing the activism of Ghedung, this study reveals the level of Ghedung's activism and its influence on the state for addressing its issues through constitutional reform. The study concludes that NTG has been able to consolidate the whole Tamang communities through cultural revival. However, NTG's activism as an ongoing social movement has been unable to massively mobilize the Tamang communities due to political division within NTGs leadership. Although NTG has been struggling for the last three decades, it has not been able to get support from other institutions such as civil society, religious organizations, trade unions, and even political parties for constitutional amendments despite the favorable political context IMPLICATION OF THE THESIS This study not only reveals the situation of indigenous peoples' cultural, political, and social rights but it also connotes the states' policies against indigenous peoples of Nepal. This research helps to understand the trajectories of indigenous peoples' social movement organizations for constitutional reform to secure indigenous peoples' rights. The findings of this research will contribute to the pool of research-based knowledge on the Tamang social movements, indigenous peoples' movements, and other social movements in Nepal that struggle for constitutional reform to secure the indigenous peoples' rights enshrined in international human rights instruments
