Abstract

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์นวนิยายเรื่อง Of Mice and Men ของจอห์น สไตน์เบ็กในด้านลักษณะวรรณกรรม รวมทั้งศึกษาและเปรียบเทียบการถ่ายทอดความหมาย การใช้สำนวนภาษา และกลวิธีการแปลในเรื่อง "เพื่อนยาก" สำนวนแปลของคันธา ศรีวิมล และสำนวนแปลของประชา อัตตธร ผลที่ ได้จากการศึกษามีดังนี้ Of Mice and Men เป็นนวนิยายขนาดสั้นที่เสนอเรื่องราวการต่อสู้ของชนชั้นแรงงานในสังคมอเมริกัน สมัยทศวรรษที่ 1930 ซึ่งเกิดภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำครั้งใหญ่ขึ้น สำหรับการถ่ายทอดความหมายและการใช้สำนวน ภาษาในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง "เพื่อนยาก" แบ่งเป็น 3 หัวข้อคือ การถ่ายทอดเหตุการณ์ ตัวละคร และบริบทของสังคม และวัฒนธรรม ผลจากการศึกษาคือ นักแปลทั้งสองท่านมักใช้การแปลแบบตรงตัวเป็นส่วนใหญ่ และพบการแปล ผิดความหมายในทั้งสองสำนวนแปล โดยเฉพาะการแปลคำที่มีความหมายเชิงสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ด้านการใช้ สำนวนภาษาพบว่า คันธามีความโดดเด่นในการใช้พรรณนาโวหารเพื่อบรรยายฉากและเหตุการณ์ ส่วนประชามี ความโดดเด่นในการใช้ภาษาปากเพื่อการถ่ายทอดคำพูดและบทสนทนาของตัวละคร ด้านกลวิธีการแปลแบ่งเป็น 3 ระดับคือ ระดับคำ ระดับวลี และระดับประโยค ในระดับคำพบว่า นักแปล ทั้งสองแปลคำภาษาต่างประเทศโดยการใช้คำทับศัพท์โดยตรง การเติมคำบอกลักษณะหน้าคำทับศัพท์ และการใช้ คำอ้างอิงถึงสิ่งที่กว้างกว่า ในการแปลคำสรรพนามพบความแตกต่างคือ คันธาใช้คำสรรพนามของไทยตามยุค สมัยปัจจุบัน แต่ประชาใช้สรรพนามของไทยตามยุคสมัยของตนหรือราวสามสิบปีที่ผ่านมา ในระดับวลีพบว่า ส่วนใหญ่นักแปลทั้งสองจะแปลสำนวนโดยวิธีตีความ หรือใช้การเทียบเคียงกับสำนวนไทย หากเป็นคำ เปรียบเทียบ ผู้แปลทั้งสองมักจะใช้วิธีแปลตรงตัว ในระดับประโยคพบว่า นักแปลทั้งสองปรับเรียงคำในประโยค แปลตามไวยากรณ์ภาษาไทย และการปรับประโยคกรรมวาจกให้เป็นประโยคกรรตุวาจก ส่วนการใช้เครื่องหมาย วรรคตอนพบความแตกต่างคือ คันธาใช้เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนที่สอดคล้องตามความนิยมและหลักไวยากรณ์ ภาษาไทย แต่ประชาเลือกใช้เครื่องหมายจุลภาค และเครื่องหมายยัติภังค์ด้วย

This thesis is a study of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men in terms of literary elements and in terms of meaning transfer and translation techniques: it is a comparative analysis of two Thai versions translated by Kantha Srivimol and by Pracha Uttathon. The results of the study are as follows: John Steinbeck's purpose in Of Mice and Men was to portray the society and the struggles of the working classes in the United States during the Great Depression (1930's). The comparative analysis of meaning transfer was conducted in 3 areas: situations, characters, and the context of society and culture. Kantha and Pracha frequently used literal translation in order to maintain the meaning of the original text. Another aspect found was mistranslation due to the translator's failure to accurately translate the meaning of words or phrases, especially in terms of social and cultural context. In terms of language use, Kantha excelled in narrating settings and situations while Pracha was good at using spoken language. The comparative analysis in terms of translation techniques was studied in 3 levels: word, phrase, and sentence. At the word level, both Kantha and Pracha used transliteration, adding explanation in front of transliterated words and using generic words. To translate pronouns, Kantha used present Thai pronouns while Pracha used Thai pronouns which were popular 30 years ago. At the phrase level, both Kantha and Pracha mostly translated comparative phrases literally while translating idioms by using semantic interpretation or using Thai idioms. At the sentence level, 3 main techniques were found: rearranging word order, reforming passive sentences and using punctuation marks. To translate some sentences, Kantha and Pracha rearranged word order according to Thai grammar. In passive sentences, both translators often reformed them into active sentences by avoiding some words indicating passive form. When using punctuation marks, Kantha used marks following contemporary Thai usage while Pracha followed the original text: using the commas and the dashes.
