Teachers' experiences in behavior management for students with autism spectrum disorder in inclusive classroom

Abstract

An inclusive classroom provides everything that every student, including the students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), needs to succeed in education and social life. However, in that environment, some factors could stimulate the unwanted behaviors in the students with ASD. Therefore, the effective behavior management is crucial. The purpose of this study was to gain a deep understanding of managing the behaviors of the students with ASD in the inclusive classrooms to prevent, reduce, and eliminate the inappropriate behaviors from the direct experiences of teachers. Six teachers in three schools were interviewed and observed. For the findings, proactive and reactive strategies were found. The proactive strategies were used over time to prevent and reduce inappropriate behaviors. Eight elements in the proactive strategies were curriculum, instruction, educational media and material, classroom rules, social and cultural background and relationship, physical environment, communication system, collaboration, and support. Four approaches to reactive strategies, ignoring, warning, non-physical punishment, and calming, were used to respond to challenging behaviors when they occur.

ห้องเรียนรวมเป็นพื้นที่ที่สามารถตอบสนองความต้องการในด้านการศึกษาและสังคมของนักเรียนทุกคนได้ ซึ่งรวมไปถึงนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมด้วย แต่องค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ของสิ่งแวดล้อมในห้องเรียนรวมก็สามารถกระตุ้นให้เกิดความประพฤติที่ไม่พึงประสงค์ในนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมได้เช่นกัน ดังนั้นการจัดการพฤติกรรมที่มีประสิทธิภาพสำหรับนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมในชั้นเรียนรวมเป็นสิ่งสำคัญอย่างยิ่ง การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการจัดการพฤติกรรมสำหรับนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมในชั้นเรียนรวมจากประสบการณ์ตรงของครูหกท่านผ่านการสัมภาษณ์และสังเกตในห้องเรียน เพื่อให้เกิดความเข้าใจในเชิงลึกเกี่ยวกับการป้องกัน ลด และหยุดพฤติกรรมไม่พึงประสงค์ในนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมในชั้นเรียนรวม ผลการวิจัยพบว่ามีสองกลยุทธในการจัดการพฤติกรรมที่ไม่พึงประสงค์สำหรับนักเรียนที่มีภาวะออทิซึมในชั้นเรียนรวมได้แก่ กลยุทธเชิงรุก และกลยุทธเชิงรับ กลยุทธเชิงรุกจะถูกใช้เป็นระยะ ๆ เพื่อป้องกันและลดประพฤติพฤติกรรมที่ไม่เหมาะสม แปดองค์ประกอบของกลยุทธเชิงรุกได้แก่ หลักสูตร การสอน อุปกรณ์และส?ือการสอน กฎของห้องเรียน พื้นหลังทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมและความสัมพันธ์ ระบบการสื่อสาร และการสนับสนุนและทำงานร่วมกัน ส่วนสี่กลยุทธ์เชิงรับที่ถูกใช้เพื่อตอบสนองต่อพฤติกรรมที่ไม่เหมาะสมที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วได้แก่ การเพิกเฉย การเตือนการลงโทษที่ไม่ใช่ทางกายภาพ และการสงบสติอารมณ์
