Abstract
Emotional exhaustion from work among physicians is one of the most significant consequences of stress. Social expectation is one of the most common stressors. However, only a few studies focus on their inner feelings, especially fear. As a physician, the researcher has experienced emotional exhaustion from work and stress accumulation caused by the fear of physician’s role expectations. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to explore the fear of social expectations in the researcher and analyze the source of fear using the autoethnographic methodology. The data collection started in mid-December 2020 and ended in mid-November 2021. The researcher found that feelings and decisions were interfered with by the illusion of the ideal physician and childhood experiences. The belief that the researcher was incompetent to be a good physician as socially expected caused role conflict. Social expectations gradually created an illusion of the ideal physician, which caused the researcher to fear that she could not accomplish it. This fear triggered the researcher to represent herself as a flawless physician, consequently leading to emotional exhaustion from work. The social environment influenced the researcher’s thoughts and experiences. The fear originated from both factors. Hence, the autoethnographic methodology might be a superior choice for studying both the inner self and the impact of the social environment. Lastly, this study revealed the hidden side of the physician, suggesting that physicians can also be emotionally fragile, similar to others.
