This chapter explored the significance of the environment in the history of health and medicine, and how the links between biodiversity and health have been theorized and put into practice since the colonial sciences. The ecosystem approach promoted by the international organizations has underlined the importance of ecological dynamics for the health of humans and also of animals and plants. The new One Health by promoting collaboration and coordination between organizations, institutions, and disciplines offers the opportunity to consider a new way of conducting health research at the interface between humans and ecosystems to better inform public health policies.
