การศึกษากระบวนการแปลนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์เรื่อง The Giver ของ ลอยส์ โลว์รี จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย

Abstract

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นการศึกษากระบวนการแปลนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์เรื่อง The Giver ของลอยส์ โลว์รี จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อนำความรู้จากทฤษฎีการแปลมาปรับใช้กับการแปลนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์ ซึ่งเป็นงานวรรณกรรมที่มีลักษณะเด่นในเรื่องการสร้างคำ หรือภาษาขึ้นใหม่เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับจินตนาการหรือแนวเรื่องแบบแฟนตาซีในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยทดลองแปลนิยายเรื่อง The Giver ตามทฤษฎีการแปลแบบเทียบเคียงของยูจีน ไนดา (1964, 1982) ซึ่งเน้นความเป็นธรรมชาติและการถ่ายทอดความหมายให้ ใกล้เคียงต้นฉบับ รวมทั้งใช้ทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการสร้างคำใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก (1988, 1991) สำหรับแปลคำที่ผู้เขียนคิดขึ้นใหม่ เนื่องจากการสร้างคำใหม่ในนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์แนวแฟนตาซีเป็นปัญหาสำคัญในการทำงานแปลนอกเหนือจากปัญหาการเล่นคำและการใช้กลุ่มคำที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงกันซึ่งมักพบในนิยายทั่วไป กลวิธีที่ผู้เขียนใช้ในการสร้างคำใหม่มีทั้งการประสมคำขึ้นใหม่จากคำเดิมที่ใช้กันอยู่ การใช้คำสามัญเป็นชื่อเฉพาะเพื่อสื่อความหมายเพิ่มเติม และการใช้คำเก่าที่มีอยู่แต่สื่อความหมายใหม่ ผู้แปลต้องศึกษากลวิธีและเป้าหมายของผู้เขียนอย่างละเอียด วิเคราะห์ทั้งลักษณะคำ ทั้งบริบท แล้วจึงตัดสินใจเลือกใช้คำแปลที่เหมาะสม โดยพยายามรักษาวัตถุประสงค์ตามต้นฉบับให้ได้มากที่สุดอย่างไรก็ดี วิธีการสร้างคำ การเล่นคำ และระดับความหมายของคำในภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทยแตกต่างกัน ผู้แปลจะต้องคำนึงถึงความเป็นธรรมชาติของภาษาเป้าหมายด้วย

This thematic paper aims to study the process of translating science fiction, which often uses new words or neologism, to narrate its fantasy themes. This requires the application of special translation theories in order to convey the meaning from the English source language to the Thai target language. The Giver by Lois Lowry was chosen for this experimental translation. The translation theories applied in this study include the concept of 'closest natural equivalent of source-language message' by Eugene Nida (1964, 1982). Also applied here is the neologism concept of Peter Newmark (1988, 1991) which analyses the methods of creating new words, the main challenge to translation of science fiction beside wordplay that is frequently encountered in all works of fiction. Various approaches are taken to overcome these challenges, including: forming new compound words from existing words using a common word as a proper name in order to denote another meaning, and giving an existing word a new definition to achieve a specific purpose. Throughout the translation process, meticulous analysis of the methods and intentions of the author, as expressed in word construction and context, is essential before deciding on a term that is closest to the author's intended meaning. However, there are many different forms of word construction, wordplays and levels of meaning in Thai and English languages. As such, expert consideration of the nature of the target language is indispensable.
