Abstract
Chinese art songs have been influenced by both Western culture and the Chinese ethos of the early 20th century. The political reforms in the Qing Dynasty provided a new genre for formation and were influential in the changes experienced by China today. This study aims to trace the development of Chinese art songs, analyze the political and cultural influences that shaped them, and assess their role in China’s contemporary music industry and global presence. The documentary research method was employed, using historical and thematic analysis of documents, literature, and interviews with scholars and performers. The data was categorized into political, cultural, or musical motifs to determine the factors that influence Chinese art songs. This study reveals that three stages can be distinguished in the art songs of China, namely the pre-development stage (1920-1949), the political stage (1949-1978), and finally, the global stage (1978 to date). It represents the impact of the Chinese culture on foreign cultures, changes in political regimes, and their rising influence in the world. Chinese art songs continue to evolve, influenced by the cultures of the world and indigenous peoples, and remain a significant medium in politics and relations with other countries.
