Knowledge and behavior of proper use of masks to reduce the spread of Coronavirus 2019 among secondary hospital health support personnel

Abstract

The outbreak of the Coronavirus 2019 has affected lives, health, and the economy around the world, including Thailand. Due to the rapid spread, guidelines for health personnel must be established for people’s safety. Knowledge and behavior on a proper use of face masks can be applied to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease 2019. This research was to assess the knowledge and behavior of the proper use of face masks to prevent infection of the Coronavirus 2019 among the support personnel in the Golden Jubilee Medical Center, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. The sample was 297 support personnel. The data were collected via online questionnaires, and they were analysed with descriptive statistics. The correlation of the variables was determined using Chi-square statistics and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient test. The study found that the majority of the support personnel in the Golden Jubilee Medical Center, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital were female (72.1%), with an average age of 38 years (± 7 years). Overall, their knowledge about Coronavirus disease 2019 infections was shown at a high level (84.8%). There was knowledge about the use of face masks. Appropriate use of face masks to prevent Coronavirus disease 2019 infections was revealed at a good level of knowledge (69.7%). The mask-wearing behavior to prevent Coronavirus infection reached the level of improper practice (60.6%). The factors related to the behavior of using face masks appropriately to prevent Coronavirus disease 2019 infections were education, income, years of work, history of infection with Coronavirus disease 2019, and knowledge about the use of face masks. The data can be treated as a more effective guideline to prevent and control Coronavirus disease 2019 infections in the organizations. Each subdivision can assign personnel with more years of work and experience to be an adviser or lead health-promoting training sessions for new personnel or personnel with fewer years of work. Implication of thematic paper: The result of this study can be utilized as planning data to encourage the use of face masks among support personnel to avoid Coronavirus 2019 infection that will negatively affect the safety and the performance of health support personnel.

การระบาดของการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ส่งผลกระทบชีวิต สุขภาพ และเศรษฐกิจทั่วโลกรวมทั้งประเทศไทย จากการแพร่กระจายอย่างรวดเร็วของไวรัส จึงต้องกำหนดแนวทางปฏิบัติของบุคลากรด้านสุขภาพให้มีความปลอดภัย ความรู้และพฤติกรรมการใช้หน้ากากอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสม สามารถนำมาใช้ในการป้องกันการแพร่กระจายเชื้อของการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อประเมินความรู้และพฤติกรรมการใช้หน้ากากอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ของบุคลากรสายสนับสนุนในศูนย์การแพทย์กาญจนาภิเษก คณะแพทยศาสตร์ศิริราชพยาบาล โดยมีกลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 297 คน เก็บตัวอย่างโดยใช้แบบสอบถามในรูปแบบออนไลน์ การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนา หาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวแปรใช้สถิติไคสแควร์และทดสอบค่าสัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์ของ Pearson’s Correlation ผลการศึกษาพบว่าบุคลากรสายสนับสนุนในศูนย์การแพทย์กาญจนาภิเษก คณะแพทยศาสตร์ศิริราชพยาบาล ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศหญิง ร้อยละ 72.1 อายุเฉลี่ย 38 ปี (± 7 ปี) โดยรวมมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 อยู่ในระดับความรู้มาก (ร้อยละ 84.8) มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับการใช้หน้ากากอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 อยู่ในระดับความรู้ที่ดี (ร้อยละ 69.7) มีระดับพฤติกรรมการใช้หน้ากากอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา อยู่ในระดับการปฏิบัติที่ไม่เหมาะสม (ร้อยละ 60.6) ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับพฤติกรรมการใช้หน้ากากอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ได้แก่ การศึกษา รายได้ อายุงาน ประวัติการติดเชื้อโรคติดเชื้อไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ความรู้เกี่ยวกับการใช้หน้ากากอนามัย ดังนั้น ข้อมูลนี้สามารถใช้เป็นแนวทางในการป้องกันและควบคุมการแพร่ระบาดของการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ในองค์กรให้มีประสิทธิภาพให้ดีขึ้น โดยเพิ่มเติมโปรแกรมส่งเสริมสุขภาพจากปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์ เช่น การให้คำปรึกษาและอบรมบุคลากรโดยใช้ประโยชน์จากอายุงานหรือประสบการณ์ทำงานเป็นพี่เลี้ยงหรือให้คำแนะนำทักษะให้กับบุคลากรใหม่หรือบุคลากรที่มีอายุงานน้อยกว่าในแต่ละหน่วยงาน เป็นต้น การนำผลของสารนิพนธ์ไปใช้: เพื่อใช้เป็นข้อมูลการวางแผนต่อยอดการประยุกต์ใช้ความรู้ในการสวมหน้ากากอนามัยของบุคลากรสายสนับสนุน เพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อโรคไวรัสโคโรนา 2019 ที่จะส่งผลต่อความปลอดภัย และประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของบุคลากรสายสนับสนุนได้อย่างเหมาะสม
