Need analysis for Thai dental assistants in professional development

Abstract

The competencies of dental assistants (DAs) are common but there are some differences in some competencies depending on context and necessities. The purposes of this research were to analyze and identify the performance gaps and the priority needs of the performance gap of Thai DAs to meet dental professionals’ expectations. This research was conducted with the dual-response 5 -Likert’s scale questionnaire. The content validity test of questionnaire was 0.67 -1.00 while the reliability test was 0.957 -0.975. The questionnaire was distributed by emails and Line application to 764 dentists and DAs in Thailand. The performance gap was analyzed by the difference of expected and current performance. The priority needs of performance gaps were analyzed by a modified priority need index. The population of this research is the dentists and DAs in Thailand, approximately 38,000. The sample size from Yamane’s calculation was 396 and included the dropout was 764. The response was 428. The response rate was 56 % which consisted of 213 dentists and 215 DAs. The results of 3 highest performance gaps and priority needs were similar which were 1) “competently perform basic life support in line with current guidelines”, 2) “support dentists for dental health promotion in the community”, and 3) “demonstrate knowledge of and ability to perform first aid for common minor accidents and condition”, respectively. This research demonstrates the performance gaps in the professional development of Thai dental assistants, which would be the basis of systematic improvement of dentist assistant training programs. IMPLICATION OF THE THESIS: The results of this research showed the performance gaps and priority needs for the performance gaps of Thai DAs competencies. Thai dentists can use these results for setting systematic DAs training programs. Dental schools can adopt performance gaps and priority needs to establish DAs training programs or continuing education to fulfill the performance gaps for Thai DAs to meet dental professionals’ needs.

สมรรถนะของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ส่วนใหญ่มีความคล้ายคลึงแต่ต่างกันอยู่บ้างตามแต่บริบทและความจำเป็นของแต่ละพื้นที่ วัตถุประสงค์ของงานวิจัยนี้ เพื่อวิเคราะห์และบ่งชี้ช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงาน และเพื่อจัดลำดับความต้องการจำเป็นของช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ในประเทศไทย เพื่อให้ตรงกับความคาดหวังของวิชาชีพทันตกรรม งานวิจัยนี้ใช้แบบสอบถามที่มีรูปแบบของการให้ตอบข้อมูลแบบตอบสนองคู่ ที่ใช้มาตรวัดของลิเคิร์ท 5 ระดับ ค่าความตรงของเนื้อหาของแบบสอบถามมีค่า 0.67 -1.00 ค่าความเที่ยงของแบบสอบถามมีค่า 0.957 -0.975 แบบสอบถามถูกส่งให้กับทันตแพทย์และผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ทั่วประเทศไทยจำนวน 764 คน ผ่านทางจดหมายอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ และแอปพลิเคชันไลน์ ช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ หาได้จากผลต่างของการปฏิบัติงานที่คาดหวังและการปฏิบัติงานในปัจจุบัน การจัดลำดับความจำเป็นของช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ หาได้จาก ดัชนีลำดับความต้องการจำเป็นแบบปรับปรุง ประชากรในการวิจัยครั้งนี้คือ ทันตแพทย์และผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ในประเทศไทย มีประมาณ 38,000 คน จากการคำนวณด้วยสูตรของทาโร ยามาเน่ได้ขนาดกลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 396 คน เมื่อเผื่ออัตราการไม่ตอบกลับจึงส่งแบบสอบถามทั้งหมด 764 ฉบับ ได้รับแบบสอบถามตอบกลับ 428 ฉบับ อัตราตอบกลับประมาณร้อยละ 56 แบ่งเป็นทันตแพทย์ 213 คน และ ผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ 215 คน ผลวิจัยพบว่า ผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์มีช่องว่างผลการปฏิบัติงานและความต้องการจำเป็นลำดับที่ 1 -3 ใกล้เคียงกัน โดยมีลำดับความต้องการจำเป็น ดังนี้ 1) สมรรถนะและทักษะในการปั๊มหัวใจ เพื่อช่วยชีวิตตามแนวปฏิบัติได้อย่างถูกต้อง 2) สมรรถนะและทักษะการช่วยทันตแพทย์สำหรับการส่งเสริมสุขภาพช่องปากในชุมชน 3) สมรรถนะและทักษะเกี่ยวกับการปฐมพยาบาลเบื้องต้นจากอุบัติเหตุต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างถูกต้อง ทันท่วงที ผลจากงานวิจัยนี้ จะนำไปสู่การปฏิบัติเพื่อการจัดอบรมผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์อย่างเป็นระบบต่อไป การนำผลของวิทยานิพนธ์ไปใช้: ผลการวิจัยนี้ แสดงถึงช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงาน และลำดับความต้องการจำเป็นของช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ในประเทศไทย ทำให้ทันตแพทย์ในประเทศไทยสามารถใช้ผลนี้ในการจัดโปรแกรมการฝึกผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ได้อย่างเป็นระบบ โรงเรียนทันตแพทย์สามารถนำผลช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงาน และลำดับความต้องการจำเป็นของช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานนี้สร้างโปรแกรมการฝึกผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์และสร้างหลักสูตรการศึกษาต่อเนื่องเพื่อปิดช่องว่างของผลการปฏิบัติงานของผู้ช่วยทันตแพทย์ในประเทศไทย เพื่อตอบสนองความจำเป็นของวิชาชีพทันตกรรม
