Youth engagement for the protection of endangered species in Thailand : a case study on fighting extinction project

Abstract

Today, we are experiencing a global loss of biodiversity. This loss can be measured through the high numbers of vertebrate fatalities worldwide. In Thailand, we have the numbers indicating certain areas of environmental impacts such as the decrease in forest areas, and no definite number of the loss of biodiversity. Furthermore; The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Thailand also stated that "raising conscious, awareness, and understanding value of natural resources among the youth made to build their love and for them to protect their own natural resources, is the key to sustainable conservation" This is why the researcher chose the topic to study using "Fighting Extinction" a project by EEC Thailand which engages youth to conserve endangered animals. This research will be exploring the current strategies, youth engagement and their restrictions and limitations as well as proposing a potential direction for the protection of endangered species. As for the methodology, the researcher used a qualitative research using EEC employees, environmental experts, knowledgeable experts and parents of the participants as the research's key informants. The results show that technology, and interactive learning were the current strategies being used, with the case study, fighting extinction showing the different stages that allowed the youth to be engaged in protecting the endangered species, and youth's difference in age, culture and upbringings were the key limitations. Lastly, the improvement of cooperation from various sectors such as the general public, public and private sector and contribution from the networks abroad was the recommended direction for the encouragement of youth engagement.

โลกได้สูญเสียความหลายหลายทางชีวภาพ ซึ่งเห็นได้จากสถิติการตายของสัตว์ที่มี กระดูกสันหลังหลายพันธุ์ชนิดทั่วโลก สำหรับประเทศไทยแม้ยังไม่มีตัวเลขการลดลงของความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพเหมือนดัชนีโลก แต่ตัวเลขบ่งชี้ทางสิ่งแวดล้อม เช่น การลดลงจำนวนสัตว์ป่า จำนวนพื้นที่ป่าไม้ และการถูกคุกคามผืนป่ามีมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผู้วิจัยจึงเลือกหัวข้อวิจัยดังกล่าว โดยใช้กรณีศึกษาโครงการ "การต่อสู้เพื่อหยุดการสูญพันธุ์" ที่เน้นการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชน เพื่อการปกป้องสัตว์ใกล้สูญพันธุ์ที่จัดทำโดยองค์กรสิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษาประเทศไทย การวิจัย ครั้งนี้ศึกษากลยุทธ์และการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชน รวมถึงข้อจำกัดต่าง ๆ และการเสนอแนะแนวทางเพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชนต่อการอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่า ทั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยใช้การวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพโดยการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม ด้านการพัฒนาเยาวชน เจ้าหน้าที่ศูนย์สิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษา และผู้ปกครองเยาชนที่เข้าร่วมโครงการฯ ผลการศึกษา พบว่า กลยุทธ์ในปัจจุบันใช้เทคโนโลยีและการเรียนรู้แบบมีปฏิสัมพันธ์เป็นหลัก โดยโครงการ "การต่อสู้เพื่อหยุดการสูญพันธุ์" ได้ให้ความสำคัญกับการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชนเป็นอย่างมาก ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีภายใต้ข้อจำกัดที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเยาวชนแต่ละบุคคล ได้แก่ อายุ สภาพแวดล้อมของเยาวชนแต่ละครอบครัวระยะเวลาที่เข้าร่วมโครงการ โดยหากจะเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของโครงการนี้ควรรับการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน รวมถึงการสร้างเครือข่ายกับต่างประเทศ เพื่อยกระดับการมีส่วนร่วมของเยาวชนต่อการหยุดยั้งการสูญพันธุ์สัตว์ป่า
