Title
Antimicrobial activities of Suregada multiflora extracts against skin pathogens
Abstract
Suregada multiflora A. Juss. is frequently used as one of herbal medicine in Thai
traditional recipes for treating dermatological diseases; i.e. Yaw disease, leprosy, eczema,
psoriasis, and skin infection diseases. This research aimed to study antimicrobial activities of
S. multiflora extracts which were carried out by serial manner of extraction (hexane,
dichloromethane, and 95% ethanol) and the traditional extraction (decoction and maceration
with aqueous and 95% ethanol, respectively). The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)
were determined by resazurin-based broth microdilution assay. The Minimal Bactericidal
Concentration (MBC) were subsequently determined using drop-plate method. For Gram–
positive bacteria and fungi, hexane extract of S. multiflora exhibited antimicrobial activity
against Staphylococus epidermidis DMST 15471, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923,
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300, Cutibacterium acnes
DMST 14916, and Candida albicans DMST 5815 with the MIC values of 0.1563, 0.625, 0.625,
0.625, and 1.25 mg/mL, respectively. While, the MBC values of S. multiflora hexane crude
extract were 0.3125, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL for S. epidermidis, C. acnes, and C. albicans,
respectively. For S. multiflora dichloromethane crude extract, the MIC values of 0.0781, 0.625,
0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 mg/mL were respectively found for S. epidermidis, S. aureus, C. acnes, C.
albicans, and MRSA, however, its MBC values were detected only in S. epidermidis and C.
acnes with 0.625 and 1.25 mg/mL, respectively. From this study, the extracts of S. multiflora,
revealed the in vitro potential antimicrobial activities against some skin pathogens which
supports Thai traditional remedies use of S. multiflora for treatment of skin disease.
