The music of Arthur Edward Pepper from the album Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section

Abstract

This thesis is a study of the music of the American alto saxophone artist and composer Arthur Edward Pepper, from the album entitled Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section. The purpose of this study is to analyse his style of improvisation and to transcribe several of his songs. This study will enable an imposition of novel strategies in practicing processes, and enable the preparation of a solo performance for the completion of the researcher's Master's degree. The 7 songs selected from the album were You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To , Red Pepper Blues , Imagination , Waltz Me Blues , Straight Life , Jazz Me Blues and Tin Tin Deo . From an analysis of Art Pepper's improvisation style, the researcher found that the majority of the solo play articulation comes from elements of jazz language. Moreover, the most commonly found elements include Change Running, Digital Patterns, Enclosure, 7-3 Resolution and 3-b9. Analysis of the band playing together showed that all 7 songs have a swing feel, but vary in their tempo from slow to fast (mm.105-276). The playing technique of each musician also displays a unique style of interpreting this swing feel.

สารนิพนธ์นี้เป็นการศึกษาแนวทางดนตรีของ Arthur Edward Pepper ศิลปิน อัลโต้แซ็กโซโฟนและนักประพันธ์เพลงชาวอเมริกันจากอัลบั้ม Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์สไตล์อิมโพรไวเซชั่นการบรรเลงอัลโตแซกโซโฟนของ Art Pepper และถอดทำนองการเรียบเรียงเสียงประสานของวงเพื่อนำผลจากการศึกษามากำหนด กลยุทธ์ในการฝึกซ้อม และจัดเตรียมการแสดงเดี่ยวในระดับบัณฑิตศึกษา โดยบทเพลงที่คัดเลือกจากในอัลบั้มจำนวน 7 เพลง ได้แก่ "You'd Be So Nice To come Home To", "Red Pepper Blues", "Imagination", "Waltz Me Blues", "Straight Life", "Jazz Me Blues", "Tin Tin Deo"จากการศึกษาวิเคราะห์สไตล์อิมโพรไวเซชั่นของ Art Pepper พบว่าสำนวนในแนวบรรเลงเดี่ยวส่วนใหญ่มาจากส่วนประกอบของภาษาในดนตรีแจ๊ส โดยส่วนประกอบที่พบบ่อยที่สุดได้แก่ Change Running, Digital Patterns, Enclosure, 7-3 Resolution และ 3-b9 นอกจากนี้ จากการศึกษาการบรรเลงของวง พบว่าเพลงทั้ง 7 เพลงล้วนเป็นจังหวะสวิงเหมือนกัน แต่มีความแตกต่างของอัตราความเร็วจากช้าไปเร็ว (mm.105-276) และวิธีการบรรเลงของนักดนตรีแต่ละคนในวงสร้างสรรค์รายละเอียดให้แต่ละเพลงมีสไตล์ของจังหวะสวิงที่หลากหลาย
