Abstract
This research investigates the consequences of young mothers’ economic dependence in Timor-Leste, in relation to promote and empower women’s rights in the social, cultural, and economic sphere. It furthermore explores how these young women face challenges particularly in economic hardship “Economic hardship” here refers to young mother’s financial insecurity in the household, which most of the time put them at risk of suffering economic dependence followed by vulnerabilities. A qualitative research approach was applied during data collection, using the case study of young women living in an area called Aileu Municipality. The research seeks to find answers to the following issues: first, the situation of young mother’s economic dependency and its impact on their economic rights

This thesis finds that women economic insecurity under marital status become an influential factor leading to young mother’s economic dependency in Timor-Leste. Vulnerability of choices and male domination through patriarchal norms and beliefs also a strong influence within a household, which impact young mothers too. This analysis enables us to better understand how progressive thinking and education can transform young mothers’ mindset and improve their self-advancement and the development of their children. This research found that
a). A gender stereotype of women in household work contributing to economic insecurity, b). Lacking decision making due to less educational knowledge have also contributed to the dependency of women. These circumstances have left women (young mothers) in a severe condition of not exercising their economic freedom at all and are not able to be economically empowered. IMPLICATION OF THESIS: In the first place, this study reflects on the economic hardship of young mothers and the challenges they face in enjoying their economic, social, and cultural rights within the household. The following implications of this research contribute to the understanding of young families’ financial insecurity that could affect long-term economic development for young mothers. Another implication of the research is to reach out to more national, international agencies, or local organizations in order to increase economic share generation and to raise awareness of gender equality in order to promote and protect women’s economic rights in the community.
