A literature review on personality characteristics influencing academic success of medical students

Abstract

The study aimed to review literatures on personality characteristics influencing academic success of medical students and also to identify which among the personality characteristics has the biggest effect on academic success. In order to find out the answer of the purpose of the study, the researcher followed a three-step guideline consisting of: 1) identifying databases and keywords to be used, 2) establishing the criteria for specification and eligibility of the articles, and 3) evaluating quality of the articles by using critical appraisal of research and level of strength. Based on search strategy, there were 11 articles which fulfilled the predetermined criteria, the results of which revealed that the most influential personality characteristic that affects academic success of medical students is conscientiousness . The traits agreeableness and openness to experience when combined with conscientiousness can be strong predictors for academic success. Neuroticism and extraversion were found to have no association with academic success of medical students. Moreover, there are other personal qualities such as burn out, self-efficacy, life, event, mental agility, empathy, health and wellness, which may influence academic success of medical students, in both positive and negative ways

การศึกษานี้มุ่งหวังเพื่อทบทวนวรรณกรรมเพื่อศึกษาลักษณะบุคลิกภาพที่มีผลต่อการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์และระบุลักษณะบุคลิกภาพที่มีผลมากที่สุดต่อการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์ โดยดำเนินการศึกษา ดังนี้ 1) ระบุฐานข้อมูลและคำสำคัญที่ใช้ในการสืบค้น 2) กาหนดเกณฑ์เพื่อสืบค้นและคัดเลือกบทความ 3) ประเมินคุณภาพของบทความที่ได้รับ จากผลการสืบค้น พบบทความที่เกี่ยวข้องกับวัตถุประสงค์และสอดคล้องตามเกณฑ์ที่กำหนดทั้งสิ้น 11 บทความ เมื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์ผลและสังเคราะห์ พบว่าลักษณะบุคลิกภาพห้าองค์ประกอบที่มีผลมากที่สุดต่อการทำนายการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์ คือ บุคลิกภาพแบบมีจิตสำนึก ส่วนบุคลิกภาพแบบประนีประนอมและบุคลิกภาพแบบเปิดรับประสบการณ์จะมีประสิทธิภาพในการทำนายการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์มากขึ้นเมื่อร่วมกับบุคลิกภาพแบบมีจิตสำนึกและบุคลิกภาพแบบอื่นๆ ส่วนบุคลิกภาพแบบแสดงตัวและบุคลิกภาพแบบหวั่นไหวยังไม่สามารถสรุปความสัมพันธ์กับการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์ได้ ทั้งนี้ ผลการศึกษายังพบว่าลักษณะบุคลิกภาพอื่นๆ อาทิ ภาวะหมดไฟในการทำงาน การรับรู้ความสามารถของตนเอง ความเครียดในชีวิต ความรู้สึกไวต่อบุคคลอื่น การเห็นอกเห็นใจผู้อื่น สุขภาพและความสุขสมบูรณ์ ต่างก็มีผลต่อการประสบความสำเร็จด้านการเรียนของนักศึกษาแพทย์ทั้งในทางบวกและทางลบ
