Abstract
Russell Ferrante, an American jazz pianist is a member and founder of the renowned fusion jazz band, Yellowjackets. This research aimed at to analyzing the system and elements that Ferrante used in his improvisation. The author emphasized on the solos from the Yellowjackets' songs, which have different styles and harmony in the following songs (1) Mosaic, from Mint Jam, composed by Bob Mintzer (2) New Jig, from Mint Jam, composed by Russell Ferrante and (3) Why is it, from Timeline, composed by Bob Mintzer. From the analysis, the author catagorized the information into (1) Harmony of the selected tunes, explaining how scales were chosen to play over different chord types (2) the Elements of solo lines, presenting languages and devices that Ferrante used to build his lines and (3) Left-hand voicing, discussing the left-hand voicings Ferrante plays while soloing. Every topic was explained thoroughly with many comprehensive musical examples.
