Abstract
The objective of this research is to study the effect of impact angles and particle velocities on the solid particle erosion behavior of boiler steel (Fe-23Cr-8Ni and 9Cr-1Mo) at room temperature. The erosion testing were investigated using different impact angles of 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° with particle velocity of 23, 34 and 47 m/s. The erosion rate was measured by the ratio of weight loss and quantity of SiC particles. The results showed that the erosion rate increased with the increasing of the particle velocity. In addition, the erosion rate at the impact angle of 30° was higher than that at impact angle of 90°, exhibiting as a ductile material. The eroded surface showed that there were ploughing and displaced material at different eroded area, resulting from ductile behavior. In the other hands, the eroded surface showed pitting action and indentations at impact angle of 90°, concerning with brittle material. The surface morphology and chemical composition were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD). The erosion mechanisms were further discussed in this research.
