The effects of using task-based language teaching on the development of speaking ability : a study of teacher and student perceptions at high school levels in Thailand

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of Task-BasedLanguage Teaching (TBLT) by Thai students. This study looked into the effectivenessof speaking tasks, students’ perceptions of task performance in developing Englishspeaking, and their opinions on the teacher's role in the communication classroom. Therelationship between students' perception and their performance, as well as thechallenges faced by teachers who implemented TBLT in their classroom, wasinvestigated. The data for this study was gathered through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observation. A questionnaire was conducted to investigate students’ perceptions towards TBLT. To collect qualitative data, students and teachers were alsointerviewed. A 6-week classroom observation was also conducted to investigate the extent to which TBLT was used in the classroom at the beginning of the school semester. The results showed that the majority of Thai students preferred to use TBLTin language tasks to develop their speaking abilities. They also demonstrated some concerns regarding the use of TBLT in the classroom in terms of the workload for students as well as the teachers. Furthermore, this study revealed challenges for task-based teaching and supported English teachers and curriculum designers in addressing students' needs from their perspective. TBLT is an effective way to develop language skills, especially in terms of speaking and listening skills. The participants completedclass activities that assisted them in developing task performance. Furthermore, TBLTwas an effective way to increase learners' self-awareness by emphasizing the relevance of using real language in daily life by association with the implementation of givenreal-world activities in the classroom. To support the prior research findings, this study also suggested that EFL teachers in Thailand can implement TBLT in their classes since Thai students tend to feel positive towards this new way of learning.

งานวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการรับรู้การเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการพัฒนาทักษะด้านการพูด ด้วยการใช้การเรียนการสอนโดยใช้ภาระงานเป็นฐานแนวคิด (Task-Based Language Teaching) อีกทั้งมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงประสิทธิภาพของการเรียนการสอนโดยใช้ภาระงานเป็นฐานแนวคิดในการพัฒนาการพูดของผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษชาวไทย การศึกษาครั้งนี้ศึกษาทั้งหมด ๖ สัปดาห์ของการเรียนการสอน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในงานวิจัยครั้งนี้ประกอบด้วยการสังเกตการณ์ห้องเรียน การสัมภาษณ์ครูและนักเรียน และแบบสอบถาม ในการเก็บข้อมูลวิจัย ผู้วิจัยเข้าร่วมสังเกตการณ์ในห้องเรียนเป็นระยะเวลา ๖ สัปดาห์ หลังจากนั้นได้แจกแบบสอบถามความพึงพอใจให้ผู้เข้าร่วมวิจัย และได้อาสาสมัครจากนักเรียนและผู้เข้
