A study of Mulgrew Miller's jazz style and his trio in From Day to Day album

Abstract

This graduate recital document focused on Mulgrew Miller's jazz style and his trio in the album From Day to Day. It comprises discussion regarding two main points first, the analysis of Mulgrew Miller improvisation style from two selected tunes in the album From Day to Day, and second, the study of Miller's techniques to create the head of the song. Topics addressed in this paper contain analysis regarding these matters: Miller's style of improvisation, a relationship between melody and chord voicing, and re-harmonization techniques. The research information would be applied into the process of recital preparation as the next step. The recital repertoires selected from Miller's From Day to Day album included One Notch Up, Farewell to Dogma, Playthang, La Chambre, and From Day to Day which composed by Miller, and while What a Difference a Day Made composed by Stanley Adams and Maria Grever
