In recent years, the integration of diverse musical genres has gained prominence in music education, promoting creativity, cultural awareness, and collaborative learning. This study explores the pedagogical value of jazz and string ensemble fusion through the analysis of an original composition titled Among the Koi. The purpose of the study is to examine how cross-genre compositional techniques can enhance student learning in contemporary music education. A practice-based analytical methodology was employed to evaluate six key techniques counterpoint, tremolo, vibrato, chromaticism, chord tone reinforcement, and polyrhythm embedded in the composition. Drawing influence from artists such as Charlie Parker, George Gershwin, Joe Venuti, and Stéphane Grappelli, the composition blends jazz swing with classical string textures and Chinese musical aesthetics. The findings indicate that Among the Koi supports the development of compositional and improvisational skills, strengthens ensemble coordination, and provides opportunities for expressive and culturally informed performance. These insights suggest that original cross-genre works can serve as effective instructional tools in music classrooms, ensemble rehearsals, and curriculum development. The study contributes to the growing discourse on hybrid musical practices and offers practical strategies for educators seeking to integrate creativity, collaboration, and cultural diversity into music education frameworks.
