การแปลนิราศเมืองแกลงของสุนทรภู่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษ

Abstract

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกลวิธีการแปล นิราศเมืองแกลง ของ สุนทรภู่ จากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ระหว่างฉบับแปลของพระวรวงศ์เธอพระองค์เจ้าเปรมบุรฉัตร (ฉบับตีพิมพ์ พ.ศ. 2527) กับ ฉบับแปลของ เสาวณีย์ นิวาศะบุตร (ฉบับตีพิมพ์ พ.ศ. 2558) จากการศึกษาตามแนวคิดการแปลโดยการปรับของ Bastin (2011) และแนวคิดการแปลไทยเป็นอังกฤษของ พิมพันธุ์ เวสสะโกศล (2558) ผลการศึกษาพบว่า พระวรวงศ์เธอพระองค์เจ้าเปรมบุรฉัตร และ เสาวณีย์ นิวาศะบุตร ถ่ายทอด นิราศเมืองแกลง เป็นกลอนเปล่าประเภท free verse โดยใช้กลวิธีการถ่ายทอดความหมาย ดังนี้ 1. การทับศัพท์ 2. การใช้คำหรือสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษที่มีความหมายตรงกับต้นฉบับ 3. การใช้คำหรือสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียง 4. การอธิบายเพิ่มเติม 5. การแปลตรง และ 6. การละ นิราศเมืองแกลงฉบับแปลทั้ง 2 ฉบับนำเสนอเนื้อหาและภาพของบทกวีบางส่วนแตกต่างกัน เนื่องจากการตีความที่แตกต่างกัน ของผู้แปลอย่างไรก็ตาม นิราศเมืองแกลงฉบับแปลทั้ง 2 ฉบับถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรมโดยรักษาเนื้อหาที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับวัฒนธรรมของต้นฉบับเอาไว้ แสดงให้เห็นว่าช่วงเวลาในการแปลที่แตกต่างกันไม่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพการแปล กลวิธีการแปลโดยการปรับและกลวิธีการแปลไทยเป็นอังกฤษสามารถนำมาปรับใช้ในการถ่ายทอดความหมายของกวีนิพนธ์ได้

The purpose of this research is to study and compare two English translations of Sunthorn Phu's Nirat Muang Klaeng, namely that of H.H. Prince Prem Purachatra's (published in 1984) and Sawanee Nivasabutr's translation (published in 2015). The adaptation techniques presented by Bastin (2011) and the Thai-English translation guidelines developed by Vessakosol (2015) were used to analyze the strategies used with translation. According to the findings, both H.H. Prince Prem Purachatra and Sawanee Nivasabutr translated Nirat Muang Klaeng into free verse form. They applied a variety of translation strategies namely: Transcription/Transliteration, Equivalence, Non-equivalence, Explanation, Literal translation and Omission. The two translations presented different stories and images based on interpretation of the source text. However, the cultural translation of Nirat Muang Klaeng in both versions tended to retain the cultural elements of the source text. It is suggested that different translation periods could be used since it could not affect the quality of the translation. Moreover, the adaptation techniques and Thai-English guidelines were appropriate for poetry translation.
