Abstract

The objectives of this study are : to study the adjustment of graduates with hearing impairment to their work places, and to study factors that influence their adjustment. Samples were 51 graduates with hearing impairment of Ratchasuda College, Mahidol University with Bachelor of Arts (Deaf Studies) in academic year 2003 who were employed at the time of the study. The study was done in two phases: the first three months after graduation and the first six months after graduation. The instruments of the study were questionnaires and interview forms. The study found that, in the first phase of the study, none of the factors mentioned in the questionnaire influenced the adjustment of the graduates, and in the second phase of the study, the factor, range of salary influenced the adjustment of the graduates with statistical significance of 0.05. The graduates who could adjust themselves well for the first three months of work could also adjust themselves well for the first six months of work, and those who could not adjust themselves well for the first three months of work could not adjust themselves well for the first six months of work either. Most graduates could well adjust to the work environment due to two reasons : First, most of them worked at the work places where there were other employees with hearing impairment. Second, Ratchasuda College has career counseling programs that prepare the hearing impaired graduates to enter their work lives. Some graduates could not well adjust themselves due to the following reasons : First, there were a few employees with hearing impairment in their work places. Second, they could not communicate with their bosses and colleagues. Third, they lacked social skills and did not understand hearing culture, which is somewhat different from deaf culture. Suggestions 1. The academic institutes that have hearing impaired students should educate them about social skills and hearing culture and should have career counseling programs for them including the follow up and evaluative programs, support and training, etc. 2. Hearing impaired students should learn more about hearing culture to adjust them to mainstream society and should improve their reading and writing skills so that they can communicate with hearing people.
