This thematic paper aims to examine the improvisation of Gilad Hekselman in bass-less trio by choosing and analyzing three songs from the albums by John Raymond & Real Feels. The selected songs were: Thaddeus composed by John Raymond, Yesterday composed by John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney, and This Land Is Your Land composed by Woody Guthrie The analysis focused on the four major elements of Hekselman's improvisation which included 1) rhythmic devices, 2) harmonic devices, 3) polyphony technique, and 4) accompaniment of himself in his solos. The result of the analysis showed that Gilad frequently uses complex rhythmic ideas combine with the polyphony techniques. He also uses chords and intervals for accompanies himself. Despite these, he still maintains the traditional jazz languages in his improvisational. The researcher has applied the new-found knowledge in the master recital and in creating practice methods based on Gilad's style to provide the effective adaptation and this knowledge could be applicable in other band formats in the future, such as duo or solo.
