A measurement and evaluation of the responsiveness of streaming media video over UDP

Abstract

Today's growth of high speed internet connections and number of connected PCs indicates a growth in the rate of streaming media over the internet and this leads to a impending threat of unresponsive UDP traffic. The response of commercial streaming media applications such as Microsoft Windows Media Services and Windows Media Player will play an important role in networks which use streaming media. Unfortunately, there are few empirical studies that analyze the responsiveness of commercial streaming media. The objective of this research was to study how streaming media responds to a congested network. A streaming media test bed which allowed systematic variation of the network and content encoding characteristics was built. The responsiveness was analyzed by comparing streaming media flows to TCP-friendly flows under various streaming configurations and network conditions. Overall, streaming media is responsive to congestion encountered in a network. However, it is important to build networks that better accommodate their turbulence.

ในปัจจุบันจะเห็นได้ว่าอัตราการใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตความเร็วสูง รวมทั้งมีอัตราการใช้งานของ มีเดียสตรีมมิ่งก็เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องไปในทิศทางเดียวกันซึ่งอัตราการเติบโตที่สูงขึ้นนั้นอาจจะมีผลทำให้การตอบสนองของเครือข่ายที่ใช้งานโดยโพโตคอลยูดีพี (UDP Protocol) ไม่สามารถรองรับได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ซึ่งการให้บริการทางเชิงพาณิชย์ ของระบบ มีเดียสตรีมมิ่งแบบต่างๆ เช่น Microsoft Windows Media Services, Windows Media Player จะเป็นตัวสำคัญที่ทำให้มีผลกระทบต่อระบบเครือข่ายของมีเดียสตรีมมิ่ง นอกจากนั้น ยังมีประเด็นที่เราต้องมาทำการศึกษาและวิเคราะห์ของผลการตอบสนองของการให้บริการมีเดียสตรีมมิ่งในเชิงพาณิชย์ อีกวัตถุประสงค์ของการทำวิจัยในครั้งนี้ เพื่อที่จะได้ทราบว่า มีเดียสตรีมมิ่งนั้นมีผลทำให้เกิดการคับคั่งของระบบเครือข่ายได้อย่างไร นอกจากนี้ เราได้สร้าง มีเดียสตรีมมิ่งขึ้นมาเพื่อทดสอบระบบในหลายๆเครือข่าย รวมทั้งได้วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเปรียบเทียบมีเดียสตรีมมิ่ง กับ โพโตคอล ทีซีพี (TCP protocol) ภายใต้ มีเดียสตรีมมิ่ง หลายๆแบบ และเงื่อนไขที่แตกต่างกัน โดยรวมสรุปแล้ว มีเดียสตรีมมิ่งนั้นสามารถตอบสนองความคับคั่งของระบบเครือข่ายได้และเป็นสิ่งสำคัญในการสร้างระบบเครือข่ายให้สามารถรองรับได้ในเงื่อนไขที่หลากหลาย
