Abstract
Child marriage is a critical issue that has a great impact on girls in the rural areas in Myanmar although the incidents have been under-reported. This study applies the narrative approach to explore how early marriages affect rural girls due to economic dependence on their partners. The objectives of the study are to analyze the impacts of marriage on girls in terms of economic, social and cultural rights, and to explore the experiences of the girls. The researcher conducts six-in-depth interviews with girls who got married at a young age, and conducts interviews with four INGOs staff who are working on child protection and child rights. The study finds that early marriage drives the girls to extreme poverty due to debt, leading to no access to basic health service during the pregnancy and delivery of the child. The results show the girls' economic, social and cultural rights are violated, and the girls' economic dependency even leads to domestic violence and gender-based violence. This research strives a better public awareness on this issue and is expected to push policymakers to address and change systemic causes that perpetuate this practice. IMPLICATION OF THESIS The research recommends that the State promote gender equality, and make strong law enforcement to eliminate child marriage. The state must train parents, children, community, and society as a whole about the rights of the child and reproductive health. There should be an awareness-raising program for men about human rights and women's rights to change their behavior.
