Abstract
In the evolving field of sports nutrition, the role of functional foods in enhancing the performance of athletes represents a highly applicable area of research. This chapter explores the interconnection between functional foods and their potential to significantly boost athletic capabilities, recovery, and overall health. The chapter starts with functional foods as those that possess beneficial effects beyond basic nutrition, potentially enhancing physical performance and recovery when incorporated into an athlete’s diet. This chapter provides an overview of the scientific mechanisms through which specific nutrients in functional foods influence metabolic pathways, muscle recovery, and energy utilization. It examines how bioactive compounds like antioxidants and antiinflammatory agents can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby improving recovery time and reducing injury risk. Furthermore, the text delves into the role of each nutrient that emphasizes enhancing muscle strength, improving endurance and strength, body recovery and preventing injuries, and boosting immunity and well-being of an athlete. Evidence from both empirical studies and clinical trials is presented, highlighting the measurable impacts of various nutrients on the performance metrics in various sports. By examining recent advancements and ongoing research, this chapter provides athletes, coaches, and sports nutritionists with a comprehensive understanding of the importance of functional foods and associated nutrients in optimizing performance and recovery. The chapter concludes by suggesting directions for future research and potential developments in the integration of these nutrients into sports dietary practices.
