Abstract
There are many prosthetic foot designs available, as a result, the selection of a prosthetic foot is crucial as various types of prosthetic feet serve different purposes. Even though the prosthetic foot is vital for optimal TTP function, the increased function and quality of life it provides comes at a cost. The prosthetic foot provided by government support in Thailand is limited to the Solid Ankle Cushion Heel (SACH) and a Single-axis foot (SA). The ideal prescription for the amputee’s functional level, therefore, is not practical. To provide the best current evidence for the clinical practice in the limited resources, a narrative review of this topic helped clarify indications for using the SA foot. It intended to assess the available related articles which aimed to illustrate the clinical outcomes associated with using this foot in the transtibial prosthesis. The scientific literature sourced from three electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, and SAGE journals. Search strategy and selection criteria created. The review contained all publications that are specifically relevant to both ‘transtibial’ and ‘single axis foot’ terms, regardless of publication year. A preliminary study on an expert opinion survey and a single case study included. A total of 21 articles related to the 'single axis foot' and 'prosthesis' and 'transtibial' keywords recruited into this review. The review summarised eleven subtopics which were General function, Kinetics, Kinematics, Muscle activity, Patient indication, Static Balance, Cost- effectiveness, Preliminary results from a short survey, Preliminary from the Single- case report, Implication to rehabilitation and Review limitation and recommendation. In conclusion, the SA foot provides an adequate function for transtibial amputation, yet it decreases gait efficiency in higher activity level patients. The lower activity level patients might get benefit from SA rapid ankle motion over those who vary in walking speed. IMPLICATION OF THEMATIC PAPER: Provide the best current evidence for the clinical practice in the limited resources.
