A guide to playing clarinet repertoire from the Romantic period

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to present what considerations should the modern clarinetist take into account when interpreting Romantic clarinet music. This includes a method of interpretation as well as an application of the method utilizing the first movement of the Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, by Carl Maria von Weber. The method of interpretation includes a synthesis of theoretical analytical practice with historical performance practice to create a general performance guide for playing clarinet repertoire from the Romantic period. This would benefit anyone interested in performance practice for Romantic music. Moreover, it could also be applied to interpreting the Romantic music of other instruments.
