Jacques Ibert's concertino da camera for alto saxophone: an analysis and performance guide

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to create an analysis and performance guide to Concertino da camera by Jacques Ibert for alto saxophone. This consisted of: (1) to gather background information on the composer and work, (2) to analyze the technical passages of the work, and (3) to create a method and exercises for practicing the technical passages of Ibert’s Concertino da camera. The analysis showed that the work can be divided into two main sections. The first part involved making a technical analysis of the work, followed by the creation of a performance guide for the more challenging aspects of the technical analysis. This performance guide contained practice methods for three extended techniques: slap tongue, altissimo, and difficult fingering. These exercises were helpful for addressing technical difficulties that arise in music. Each exercise was accompanied by a detailed explanation including specific technical instructions.
