Abstract
Maintenance of metabolic health is challenging due to lifestyle and the fact that metabolic syndrome and its associated diseases are common. Investigation into novel therapeutics for the prevention and/or treatment of metabolic diseases has shown that phytoextracts carry potential. Preclinical research has demonstrated that phytochemicals such as berberine, curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol, rutin, and hesperidin, which are derived from plants, can effectively treat metabolic diseases. In this regard, this chapter provides a brief overview of metabolic diseases and phytocompounds with the potential to maintain the metabolic health of an individual. Additionally, recent findings of the role of several phytochemical and bioactive compounds in blocking the different pathways, inducing oxidative stress and inflammation, eventually leading to metabolic diseases, are discussed.
