Abstract
ZnO nanorods are diverse materials that can be adapted for use in diverse applications from medical to electronic due to the special properties. In this work ZnO nanorods are mildly grown on a polyester microfiber substrate for use as a Photocatalyst in water treatment. ZnO nanrods are grown on the substrate using hydrothermal method at temperature lower than the boiling point of water. ZnO nanorods affixed onto the fibers provide the surfaces for photocatalitic reaction to occur. Photocatalytic efficiency is increased by doping ZnO. Characterization of the different zinc oxide nanorods is done by XRD, Infared Spectroscopy, Photoluminescence and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray. Photocatalyst test is done with degradation of indicators methyl orange and methylene blue. The filtration test is done by constructing module made out for polyester and polycaprolactone nanofiber. The test is performed on model microbe vibrio parahaemolyticus, and it is capable of removing over 99.99% of the bacteria determined by incubation of the colony from the diluted filtrate.
