The History of Interventional Neuroradiology in Thailand: A Part of Southeast Asia

Abstract

The history of interventional neuroradiology in Thailand dates back to cerebral angiography in 1964. Of course, at the same time, it has also undergone the development process of neuroimaging through aeroencephalography and ventriculography. In 1985, detachable balloons were used to embolize carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF), but the results were not ideal at that time. After 1995, there was a significant improvement in the treatment of CCF. The technique of liquid embolization for cerebral arteriovenous malformations was developed in 1993. The Department of Angiography and Interventional Radiology was established in 1999. With the establishment of the National Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) Certification Committee by the first batch of well-trained physicians, the Thai Medical Council began recruiting certified neuroscientists (neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists) for training in neurointerventional techniques in 2006. Endovascular thrombectomy started in 2008. Onyx embolization of AVMs began in 2009. Since 2010, flow diversion devices have been used to treat intracranial aneurysms. With the development of new equipment, materials, technologies, and radiation devices, as well as comprehensive standardization of training, education, and research support, coupled with strong regional and global cooperation, Thailand's neurointerventional surgery is rapidly developing and establishing itself.
