Some phonological criteria for Palaung subgrouping
(2009) Weera Ostapirat; วีระ โอสถาภิรัตน์; Mahidol University. Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia; Mahidol University. Institute of Language and Cultures for Rural Development
In this paper, the selected phonological changes shared by several Palaung dialects are discussed. The tentative subgrouping, based on innovations among the dialects, suggests that we recognize the primary split between Ta-ang and the Rumai-Darang groups. The Rumai-Darang group is further split into Rumai and the Darang groups, which include such dialects as Na-ang, Darang, Da-ang, and Daraang. This subgroup scheme implies that the center of early Palaung settlement is likely to be in the northern-Shan State, west of Salween as well as the adjacent areas of Yunnan. The Palaung settlements scattered further south in the southern-Shan State may have resulted from relatively more recent migrations, especially in case of the Darang group of dialects.

In this paper, the synchronic and diachronic phonology of Raokot dialect of Palaung will be outlined. The main purposes are to present phonological descriptions and to discuss phonological innovations in order to place Raokot into the right sub-group. A 1,000 item wordlist with English, Standard Thai, and Chinese glosses was used for data elicitation. The phonological data was elicited from native speakers of Raokot residing in Cha Ye Qing village, Luxi County, Dehong Dai Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. The results show that Raokot dialect of Palaung exhibits a phonological pattern of implosivization that seems to be similar to Luce‟s (1965) Ra-ang and Diffloth‟s (1991) Ka-ang. The historical development of Raokot phonology suggests that it shares some characteristics with Rumai and is closer to Rumai than the other three dialects of Palaung spoken in Dehong, Yunnan  Liang, Pule, or Raojin. Based on phonological innovations, this study proposes that Raokot should be classified as a sub-dialect of Rumai.

ementia and its related cognitive impairment diseases are one of the main contributors of disability in older people. This study is aimed for screening of the elderly population with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the urban area of Kyauk Tan Township in Yangon Region, Myanmar and also identifying the important associated factors of MCI in the local context. A cross-sectional study design was conducted in the form of household visit interviews by using the structured questionnaires for 350 elderly in the urban area of Kyauk Tan Township. The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment was 21% with the mean age of 70 years. Using Chi-square test for association, significantly associated factors with MCI included four socio-demographic factors (age, gender, education, and occupation), five life-style factors (alcohol drinking, physical activeness, regular meal, leisure activities and fish intake), one comorbid factor (depression), three family factors (individual income, family income and family support) and all three social factors (social network, social activities, and religiousness). Five factors including age, education level, physical activities, leisure activities and social network size were detected to have significant association with MCI when multiple logistic regressions was performed. Investigation of MCI and associated factors is important for planning the intervention programs effectively for the cognitive functional ability among the elderly.
