Department of MicrobiologyThe crystalline solid which was obtained from the ethereal extract of the fruit juice of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. composed of cucurbitacin B and dihydrocucurbitacin B. The structures of the cucurbitacins were elucidated using 1D-and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. They were 25-acetoxy-2beta, 16alpha,20beta-trihydroxy-9beta-methyl- 1 9nor-1Oalpha-lanosta-5,23-djene-3, lI,l 2-trione (cucurbitacin B, c(32)H(46)O(8)) and 23, 24-dihydro-25-acetoxy-2beta,16alpha, 20beta-trihydroxy-9beta-methyl-l9nor-l0alpha-lanosta-5-ene-3,17,12, -trione (dihydrocucurditacin B, C(32)H(48)O(8)). The MTT colorimetric assay for cytotoxicity of cucurbitacin B, dihydrocucurbitacin B and the crystalline solid was carried out.
