Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies; Chiang Mai University. Faculty of Science. Department of Geological SciencesThe Mae Than Basin in Lampang Province contains low-ranked coal reserves of northern Thailand. Coal seams and ball clays were mined in the southern part of the basin. This study focuses on the coal petrography of coal samples collected from the upper coal seam in the Mae Than Coal Mine. Both the organic and inorganic constituents provide information on the nature and characteristics of the coal, reflecting the physical and chemical behaviors of coal. Petrological analysis reveals that the Mae Than coals contain more huminite than liptinite macerals, while inertinite is negligible. Huminite occurs mainly in the form of texto-ulminite, textinite, densinite, and gelinite. Liptinite consists of sporinite, cutinite, resinite, suberinite, liptodetrinite, and terpenite. The morphology of cutinite, sporinite, and the presence of terpenite indicate that the peat-forming vegetation may consist of conifers. In addition to the macerals, the coal samples contain a small to moderate amount of mineral matter. Silica and clay minerals are the main minerals found in the cavities and between the cracks of the coals. The assemblage of macerals and mineral matter indicates that the Mae Than coals were formed mainly from common peat-forming vegetation, possibly conifers, in a freshwater forest swamp or mire in a warm temperate climate. In addition, the high degree of preservation of the macerals indicates a high water table and suggests rheotrophic, anoxic, limnotelmatic to telmatic conditions during deposition.Publication Open Access Empirical seismic fragility functions based on field survey data after the 5 May 2014 Mae Lao (Northern Thailand) earthquake(2019) Piyawat Foytong; Teraphan Ornthammarath; Mahidol University. Faculty of Engineering. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Khon Kaen University. Faculty of Engineering. Department of Civil Engineering. Sustainable Infrastructure Research and Development CenterEmpirical seismic fragility curves have been developed based on post-seismic survey data on official building damage, collected in the epicentral area of Mw 6.1, 2014 Mae Lao earthquake. In total, about 26,551 survey building data have been investigated by authorities and engineers. The typical pattern of observed damage for different structures and the reasons for damage are presented. In addition, damage statistics in the field are correlated with ground motion in order to derive empirical seismic fragility curves. Using a maximum likelihood method, different sets of fragility curves are developed to demonstrate the influence of structural material on building damage level. The good correlation between observed damage and peak ground acceleration (PGA) are observed. In addition, the results show a better seismic performance of the engineered reinforced concrete building over non-engineered buildings. These findings are essential to support a better future building damage assessments, land use management, and seismic risk mitigation planning.Publication Open Access Light scattering sensor for direct identification of colonies of Escherichia coli serogroups O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145 and O157.(2014-08-19) Tang, Yanjie; Kim, Huisung; Singh, Atul K.; Amornrat Aroonnual; อมรรัตน์ อรุณนวล; Bae, Euiwon; Rajwa, Bartek; Fratamico, Pina M.; Bhunia, Arun K.; Bhunia, Arun K.; Mahidol University. Faculty of Dentistry. Prosthodontics DepartmentPURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the color of a background substructure on the overall color of a zirconia-based all-ceramic crown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty one posterior zirconia crowns were made for twenty subjects. Seven premolar crowns and six molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with metal post and core in the first and second group. In the third group, eight molar crowns were cemented onto abutments with a prefabricated post and composite core build-up. The color measurements of all-ceramic crowns were made before try-in, before and after cementation. A repeated measure ANOVA was used for a statistical analysis of a color change of all-ceramic crowns at α=.05. Twenty four zirconia specimens, with different core thicknesses (0.4-1 mm) were also prepared to obtain the contrast ratio of zirconia materials after veneering. RESULTS: L(*) , a(*) , and b(*) values of all-ceramic crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or on a prefabricated post did not show significant changes (P>.05). However, the slight color changes of zirconia crowns were detected and represented by ΔE(*) ab values, ranging from 1.2 to 3.1. The contrast ratios of zirconia specimens were 0.92-0.95 after veneering. CONCLUSION: No significant differences were observed between the L(*) , a(*) , and b(*) values of zirconia crowns cemented either on a metal cast post and core or a prefabricated post and composite core. However, the color of a background substructure could affect the overall color of posterior zirconia restorations with clinically recommended core thickness according to ΔE(*) ab values.
