A small absorbable stent for treatment of anterior glottic web
(2012-03-01) Thongchai Bhongmakapat; Kanjalak Kantapasuantara; Phurich Praneevatakul; Mahidol University
A new one-stage approach for treatment of selected anterior glottic web has been successful. This case report illustrates its simplicity in microlaryngoscopy with complete lysis of the anterior glottic web by CO 2 laser. Then a small neck horizontal incision is made at the level of anterior commissure to gain exposure to thyroid cartilage. Absorbable suture is passed through the midline of thyroid cartilage below and above the anterior commissure. A knot is tied over thyroid ala. The suture acts as a tiny stent to prevent recurrence of the web. © 2012 The Voice Foundation.

Effectiveness of Arm Swing Exercise on Comprehensive Health Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
    (2025-09-01) Whaikid P.; Piaseu N.; Whaikid P.; Mahidol University
Background: Arm swing exercise (ASE) is a simple and accessible form of physical activity that has been reported to reduce disease risk and enhance overall health across various populations. In alignment with the World Health Organization’s... recommendations for promoting physical activity, ASE requires no specialized equipment or professional supervision. However, systematic evidence on its health benefits remains limited. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects

Sex Estimation Using Radiographic Films of the Frontal Sinuses in Thai Populations
    (2024-07-01) Ngamnusonkit B.; Vachirawongsakorn V.; Ngamnusonkit B.; Mahidol University
OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the forensic importance and applicability of the frontal sinus by evaluating its morphoscopic and morphometric characteristics in relation to sex. METHODS Antero-posterior skull radiographs of 235 individuals (141 males and 94 females) were taken using a standardized procedure. Frontal sinus morphology was observed and classified. Specific measurements (A to D) were conducted to estimate sex by developing logistic regression equations. RESULTS Frontal sinus symmetry was detected in 58.7% of the individuals. Morphometric analyses of frontal sinuses were only moderately correlated with the sex, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.629 (measurement A). The recommended cut-off score of measurement A was 6.47 cm, in which the sensitivity and specificity were 78.7% and 59.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study found significant individual variation in the frontal sinus patterns. Evaluating the frontal sinus could be used as an adjunct to other methods of personal identification, particularly for sex estimation.

Estimation of Post-mortem Interval Based on Livor Mortis using a Colorimeter in Thai Populations
    (2024-04-01) Ngamloetphochit S.; Vachirawongsakorn V.; Ngamloetphochit S.; Mahidol University
OBJECTIVE Livor mortis is a helpful and widely used method of estimating postmortem interval (PMI) in Thailand. This study aimed to investigate the value of a colorimeter as a tool for estimating the PMI. METHODS The color of livor mortis and control skin in 80 cadavers whose PMI was within 12 hours was measured by a colorimeter. The L* (brightness), a*b* (chroma and hue), and ∆E* values were compared to the control skin values. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the relationship between PMI and skin color before and after application of a specific pressure. RESULTS The results showed that colorimetric parameters were only weakly correlated with the PMI. An univariable analysis of ∆E* values was performed and showed good discriminatory power, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.82. The recommended cut-off value of ∆E* was 14 for the discrimination between early PMI (less than 6 hours) and late PMI (6-12 hours), in which the sensitivity and specificity were 72.5% and 80%. CONCLUSIONS The findings in this study reinforce the utility of colorimetric measurements in PMI estimation. With additional study and a larger sample size, the estimation of PMI could be established for general use in forensic practice.

Bullying victimization and psychological distress among a national sample of in-school adolescents in afghanistan
(2021-01-01) Supa Pengpid; Karl Peltzer; University of Limpopo; Mahidol University
Global School-Based Health Survey (GSHS) in Afghanistan. The results indicate that past-month bullying victimization was 42.4%. In adjusted multi-nomial logistic regression analysis, psychological distress, low parental support, drug use (cannabis... reported bullying victimization and internalizing factors (psychological distress) and externalizing factors (drug use, interpersonal violence, and injury) were identified as associated factors that can assist in school health promotion strategies.
