(2016) Daniel Polomski; Mahidol University. Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies
Whereas there is already a large body of research ontransitional justice mechanisms and their impacts on the Cambodian society, studies mainly focus on survivors and victims. The post-conflict generation remains largely underrepresented 7he mainobjective of this research paper is therefore to advance the under-standing of post -conflict generations' realities Zith regard to past acts of state violence. The paper aims to include voices of the Cam-Eodian youth into the academic discourse. Research findings center around four dimensions - the education system, an inter-generational conflict. the institutionali]ation of fear, and the uni Tue factor of Khmer versus Khmer violence during the Khmer Rouge era - that are considered to have an impact on hoZ CamEodian youth engages Zith (past) acts of state Yiolence Zill form the Easis of the discus-sion. It will be argued that in present day CamEodia the post-conflict generations have only little incentives to engage with the country's history of state violence, as those four dimensions obstruct an active engagement. As a consequence of such an obstructed engagement,a corrosion of the overall process of reconciliation is highly likely. The findings of the paper were established on the Easis of an inductive and qualitative, three-stage process of semi-structured interviews among (n=20) respondents. The convenience sample included Cambodian university students and young professionals between 18 and 26 years of age. who were based in Phnom Penhduring the research. The interviews were recorded and digital transcripts were analyzed based on grounded theory methods.

(2017) Sanchia Clare R. Lu; Bang-on Thepthien; Prapapun Chucharoen; ซานเชียร์ แคล์ ลู; บังอร เทพเทียน; ประภาพรรณ จูเจริญ; Mahidol University. ASEAN Institute for Health Development
The rise in overweight and obesity globally has facilitated the expansion of the weight-loss food, drinks, supplements, and services industry from a niche environment to the main market. Sales in the Thai dietary supplement market have been increasing, and the causes of this trend are unclear as to what drives people to purchase them. Hence, this study explored the determinants of use of Diet Pill, Powder and Liquid (PPLs). A cross-sectional study of 400 young adults was conducted in Bangkok, Thailand. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data from students at different grade levels of two private universities in Bangkok during May-July 2016. This study showed that 29.0% had used diet PPLs before and 2.8 % regularly used diet PPLs. Fully 61.7% of users took pills/tablets, while liquid formulations were least popular. The reasons cited for using diet PPLs include fast effect (26.6%), with 11.7% each, citing reliability of the product, friends using and other reasons. Key determinants of the use of diet PPLs are concern about body shape (Adj OR=3.37, 95%CI=1.63-6.99), friends’ use (Adj OR=4.52, 95%CI=2.28-8.96) and celebrity influence (Adj OR=5.25, 95%CI=1.58-17.49). There is a need to monitor the consumption of PPLs in social media, and provide comprehensive information on safe, alternative choices for young adults concerned about their weight.

Like Minds in Variations: Clara Schumann’s Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, op. 20
(2020) Eri Nakagawa; Mahidol University. College of Music
Robert and Clara Schumann are known as an eminent musician couple in thenineteenth century. Beginning in 1853, the couple developed a close professional and personal friendship with Johannes Brahms. The author has been fascinated by the lives and works of the three magnificent musicians, and performed a recital including three sets of variations by the three composers: Clara Schumann’s Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, op. 20; Robert Schumann’s Theme and Variations in E-flat major, WoO 24; and Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, op. 9. All three sets were written in the period from 1853 to 1854; all reflect the beautiful relationships among the three musicians: mutual adoration of Robert and Clara Schumann, profound friendship between Clara and Brahms, Robert Schu mann’s enthusiastic admiration of Brahms, and Brahms’s sincere respect for Robert Schumann. This article focuses on Clara’s Variations op. 20, a set of seven variations written in May and June 1853, dedicated to her husband for his 43rd birthday. Discussions include the origin of the theme, Robert Schumann’s Bunte Blätter (Colored Leaves) op. 99; the implication of “Clara’s motives” in his theme; and an allusion to her earlier composition, Romance variée op. 3 into the final variation, which was inserted in Brahms’s Variations op. 9 first and then suggested to Clara to do the same for her own variations.
