Abstract
This study uses Crenshaw's intersectionality framework to identify the extent to which intersectionality has been considered in the literature on the spiritual experiences of older adults and their unpaid caregivers. An integrative review was conducted through a systematic literature search in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 articles were selected for the final review. Three themes were identified: 1) disparities in spiritual experiences influenced by diverse identities, 2) spirituality and religion as coping strategies, and 3) integration of spiritual and religious considerations in the care of older adults and caregivers. Despite the significant role of spirituality and religion, there were disparities in spiritual experiences impacted by diverse identities. These findings highlight the need to incorporate spiritual and religious considerations in the care of older adults and caregivers. Adopting an intersectional lens in clinical practice and research can help prevent disparities in spiritual experiences.
