Abstract
Many ethnic children speak a mother tongue (L1) at home that is different from the national language or the language used for instruction in mainstream schools (L2) – a situation that has hindered educational development in many places. In Thailand, for example, when most Patani Malay (PM) students begin school, they only speak and understand Patani Malay and are unable to comprehend Thai, the language of instruction in Thailand’s formal education system. The result for many students is substandard academic performance. The purpose of this research study was to learn whether initial development of literacy skills in their mother tongue improves the ability of Patani Malay students to develop writing skills in Thai. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data came from classroom observation in two MLE pilot schools and two Thai-only comparison schools. To gather quantitative data, two specialized assessment instruments were designed to measure the development of writing skills. These were administered to 117 grade 1 students and 104 grade 3 students in both the 2 MLE schools and 2 comparison schools. The data were scored using a customized scoring rubric and analyzed using standard statistical methods. The results clearly showed that the Thai writing skills of Patani Malay – Thai MLE students, who learned to read and write first in Patani Malay (L1) and then in Thai (L2), were much better compared to school students who learned only in Thai (L2). This was true both with respect to understanding language features and using higher level thinking skills in grade 1 and grade 3 students. This supports the research hypothesis that developing literacy skills in the mother tongue improves the ability of ethnic minority students to master literacy in the national language.
นักเรียนกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่มีภาษาถิ่นหรือภาษาแม่แตกต่างจากภาษาราชการมักมีปัญหาในการเรียนในระบบโรงเรียน ดังเช่นในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ของไทยซึ่งประสบปัญหาผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการศึกษามาโดยตลอด จนกระทั่งมีรูปแบบการจัดการเรียนการสอนแบบทวิภาษาที่ใช้ทั้งภาษามลายูถิ่นและภาษาไทยในการพัฒนาการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนในพื้นที่ชายแดนใต้ วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและเชิงปริมาณ มีเป้าหมายเพื่อศึกษารูปแบบและกระบวนการถ่ายโอนทักษะการอ่าน-เขียนระหว่างภาษาแม่หรือภาษามลายูถิ่น (ภาษาที่หนึ่ง) สู่ภาษาไทย (ภาษาที่สอง) ของนักเรียนในโรงเรียนที่มีการจัดการศึกษาแบบทวิภาษาในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ รวมทั้งศึกษาเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพของทักษะการเขียนภาษาไทย ระหว่างนักเรียนในโรงเรียนทวิภาษา และ นักเรียนในโรงเรียนทั่วไปที่ใช้ภาษาไทยเพียงอย่างเดียวในการเรียนการสอน โดยกลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นนักเรียนไทยเชื้อสายมลายูในโรงเรียนทวิภาษาและโรงเรียนทั่วไป รวม 4 แห่ง แบ่งเป็นนักเรียนในระดับชั้น ป.1 จำนวน 117 คน และ ป.3 จำนวน 104 คน รวมจำนวนทั้งสิ้น 221 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่านักเรียนทวิภาษาที่เริ่มต้นเรียนอ่าน-เขียนด้วยภาษาแม่หรือภาษามลายูถิ่นก่อนเข้าสู่การเรียนอ่าน-เขียนภาษาไทย มีทักษะการเขียนภาษาไทยสูงกว่านักเรียนโรงเรียนคู่เทียบที่เรียนอ่าน-เขียนภาษาไทยเพียงอย่างเดียว โดยนักเรียนทวิภาษาทำคะแนนสูงกว่าอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ทั้งในระดับชั้น ป.1 และ ป.3 ครอบคลุมทักษะการเขียนภาษาไทยด้านไวยากรณ์ ด้านความหมาย และด้านการคิดวิเคราะห์ ผลการศึกษาสะท้อนให้เห็นอย่างชัดเจนว่าการเรียนอ่าน-เขียนด้วยภาษาแม่หรือภาษามลายูถิ่นของนักเรียนส่งผลดีต่อพัฒนาการในทักษะการอ่าน-เขียนภาษาไทย โดยจำเป็นต้องผ่านกระบวนการเรียนรู้ที่ใช้ระบบอักษรเดียวกันของทั้งสองภาษา และต้องใช้กระบวนการพัฒนาทักษะฟัง-พูดภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาที่สองเพื่อเพิ่มคลังคำศัพท์และสร้างความคุ้นชินในภาษาไทยแก่นักเรียน แล้วจึงเข้าสู่กระบวนการเรียนอ่าน-เขียนภาษาไทยต่อไป
