Abstract
The aim of this research outlines the general perception of sustainability and explore key areas of sustainable practice that independent hotels value. There are 4 main objectives in this research, which include: 1) Determine an independent hotel manager or owner's attitude toward sustainability. 2) Determine the motivators and perceived benefits of pursuing sustainability in a small independent hotel. 3) Recognize and address barriers and challenges when implementing sustainable practices in an independent hotel. 4) Describe the key areas of sustainability that independent hotels value. The scope of this research focuses on resort hotels in Samui Island. This research used qualitative research methodology by interviewing 12 independent hotel resort managers and owners. Data saturation and thematic analysis were applied in this research. The findings of this research can be seen as follows: From an independent hotel manager's and owner's perspective, there are 2 perceptions of sustainability. Nonetheless, they are uncertain about their understanding of this concept. There is no link between perceived benefits and sustainability motivational factors, except for cost reduction. When adopting sustainability, independent hotel managers and owners encounter various challenges and obstacles. They believe that the support from their community, government, and employees can facilitate the implementation of sustainability. Independent hotel resort owners and managers are mainly focused on environmental sustainability more than any other aspect. Implication of the thesis: This research identified the general perception of sustainability of independent hotel resorts on Koh Samui while illustrating current sustainable practices that have been applied by these hotels. The findings of this research provide a fundamental understanding of how independent hotel resorts perceive sustainability, which can be useful for organizations and researchers to develop a more effective and applicable sustainability framework for independent hotel resort in Koh Samui.
