Abstract
This work concerns building a low-cost Thai Braille Computer Notebook for persons with visual impairments. It can enable opportunities for persons with visual impairments in Thailand to work or to be employed in the field of Information Technology by providing access to more powerful applications than those normally provided in general Braille notetakers. Therefore, a prototype of an inexpensive product has been developed using open source software, local-supplied parts and off-the shelf components, such as embedded PC and industrial Braille cells. Consequently, our developed system potentially yields high reliability, flexibility and compatibility with most commercial products. We developed both hardware and software for the system. Finally, our on-the-fly Thai and English processing capability is the key that allows the people with and without visual impairments to easily and simultaneously communicate with each other. © 2011 The authors and IOS Press.
