Abstract

The effect of two different grades of carbon black (N330 and N660) on the distribution of carbon black in 50:50 butadiene rubber-nitrile/butadiene rubber (BR-NBR) blends has been investigated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. As carbon black is added, a reduction in the height of the damping peaks, due to a dilution effect, has been observed. The BR phase in the blends is preferential for both grades of carbon black to reside in than the NBR phase, probably because of its lower viscosity and lower polarity. In addition, neither grade of carbon black shows significant evidence of filler-rubber interaction, since there is no change in glass transition temperatures in the blends. © 1998 The Institute of Materials.
