    The aim of this study is to evaluate the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program B.E. 2541 at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University. Four parameters from the CIPP model, context, input, process and product, are used in this evaluation study. Using a descriptive survey, data was collected from 85 alumni who graduated during the years 2009-2011. It is analyzed by using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Overall all, the responses from alumni about their faculty ranged from above average, good, to excellent. Context assessed the faculty's compliance with its objectives, goals and it's curriculum. Input assessed the faculty's facilities, qualifications of its instructors and quality of students, which received average responses. Processed assessed the faculty's management of it's program, it's measurement of it's teaching and learning system. Product assessed the alumni themselves thru self-evaluation and professional performances. Input is the only parameter that received less than good.

    Effects of alcoholic extract from pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peels on gastrointestinal nematode egg counts in doe

    Anthelmintic drug resistant is one of the major problem that quietly reflecting the small ruminant production qualities. Because this problem recently spread out in many areas all over the world, the alternative anthelmintic methods are recently requiring, especially using local economic plants or remedies for reducing the impact. The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is one kind of fruit that is used as an anthelmintic plant in Ayurveda remedies for a long time. We investigated the anthelmintic activity of alcoholic extract from pomegranate peels against female goat gastrointestinal nematodes and the toxic effects after treatments. The results were shown that albendazole and pomegranate peel powder could not affect percent of strongyle egg per gram (EPG) when comparing with pre-treatment control data. In contrast, ivermectin injections could significantly affect a first 24h (32 ± 5%), and had continuously effect at day 3, 7 and 14 (31 ± 17%, 51 ± 13% and 33 ± 11%, respectively). Alcoholic extract of pomegranate represented significantly anthelmintic effects at day 1, 3 and 7 (45 ± 11%, 57 ± 14% and 64 ± 7%, respectively) with non-significantly different when comparing with ivermectin. We also preliminary investigated the effects of alcoholic extract from mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) peels, it could not effect on egg count number per gram when comparing with pre-treatment control. The results suggested that alcoholic crude extracts from pomegranate peels could inhibit gastrointestinal strongyle-type egg production and may be promising used as an alternative anthelmintic drugs in small ruminant farms.

    Anthelminthic effects of artemisinin and its derivatives

    Qinghao (Artemisia annua, L.), a famous herb from China, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Artemisinin, an active substance is extracted from the leaves and flowers of Qinghao, with a unique sesquiterpene lactone endoperoxide structure showing an antimalarial activity. Derivatives of artemisinin, artesunate and artemether, are the most widely used as antimalarial drugs. Since artemisinin not only possess antimalarial properties, but also active against various parasitic infection. Ongoing research on these compounds has been emphasized on the potential impact for anthelmintic treatment. Artemisinin derivatives exhibited a broad spectrum property against various trematodes, nematode, and cestode both in vitro and in vivo studies. These helminthocidal properties of artemisinin derivatives presented here provide further data for clinical investigations in the field trial study. However, a better understanding of action of artemisinin derivatives and their biomolecule target may contribute a promising possibility for clinical utility in anthelmintic application. Toxicity of artemisinin derivatives was less and was demonstrated in experimental animals with neurotoxicity and anemia.

    The Effect of adding L-Cysteine in Modified Kenny's extender on the quality of chilled stallion semen at 5oC

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementation of L-Cysteine in Modified Kenny's extender on chilled stallion semen quality at 5oC. Semen samples were collected from 3 stallions by artificial vagina and centrifugation to remove seminal plasma and diluted with Modified Kenny's extender to 50 x 106 sperm/ml. Semen samples (n=10 ejaculates) were divided into 3 portions, the first portion as the control (KE), the second portion was added with L-Cysteine 200 μmol/l (KEC200) and added L-Cysteine 400 μmol/l in the last portion (KEC400). In all samples, the percentage of progressive motility, viability and acrosome integrity were evaluated at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h after storage at 5oC. There were a significant (P < 0.05) lower percentage of dead spermatozoa in group KE200 than other groups at 24 h. There was a significantly lower percentage of progressive motility in KEC 400 compared toother groups at 48 h (P < 0.05). In addition, there was a tendency (P = 0.1) of lower percentage of dead spermatozoa in group KE200 than other groups at 48 h. At 72 h, comparing all groups, a higher percentage of viability in groups KEC200 and KEC400 was found, but not statistically significant. In conclusion, Addition of L-cysteine at a concentration of 200 μmol/l to the Modified Kenney's extender tend to improve the stallion chilled semen progressive motility, dead/alive, viability and acrosome integrity during chilled storage at 5oC for 48 h.

    The distribution of Kitti's hog-nosed Bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai) in Kanchanaburi Province

    The distribution of Kitti's Hog-nosed Bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai) was conducted in Saiyok District, Kanchanaburi Province using harp traps between April 2010 and April 2013. This species was found in 11 out of 24 caves; 9 in military area and 2 in conservation area. A total of 672 bats were captured in this survey. The length of the bat forearms were 23.0-26.3 mm and adults weighed between 1.22 and 5.94 g. Results of this study provide information for conservation of this bat in the area.

    This study aimed to compare academic achievement (GPAX) of the students in Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University between the students who admitted by quota system and Central University Admissions System (CUAS) in academic year 2010. The 254 students of the 1st-6th year were evaluated. The data were analyzed by percentage, mean and standard deviation. The results were presented as: 1) The academic achievement of the CUAS admitted students was higher than the quota system admitted students in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th year students. 2) The academic achievement of the CUAS admitted students was higher than the quota system admitted students in the veterinary preparation level whereas the academic achievement in pre-clinical and clinical levels of the quota system admitted students was higher than the CUAS admitted students.

    Anthelmintic effects of ethanolic extracts from pomegranate peels, mangosteen peels and tamarind seeds on gastrointestinal nematode egg counts in lambs

    The anthelmintic drug resistance problems in animal husbandry are widely spread all over the world. The gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep economically impact on the decreasing of live-weight gain and body condition scores and have been recently resistant to many anthelmintics, especially albendazole, levamisole, macrocyclic lactone, moxidectin and ivermectin. Therefore, the herbal medicine is the one of alternative anthelmintic ways to solve chemical resistance and economic problems in small ruminant farms. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peels, mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) peels and tamarind (Tamarindus indica) seeds extracts on gastrointestinal nematode egg counts in lambs comparing with albendazole and ivermectin. The results were shown that ivermectin could not decrease egg counted number significantly, but albendazole could significantly decrease percent of the egg per gram (EPG) when compared with pre-treatment (day 0) at day 1 (68±9%), day 3 (53±10%) and day 7 (62±8%). At day 1, the ethanolic extract of pomegranate peels and tamarind seed were significantly effect on gastrointestinal nematode egg count (47±8% and 48±10%, respectively). EPG were not affected by mangosteen peels extract. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (8-17.8 IU/L), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (88.5-127.3 IU/L), creatinine (0.7-0.9 mg/dl) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (11-18.5 mg/dl) value after treatment were also normal and the lambs did not express any clinical renal or hepatic symptoms. It is concluded that the ethanolic extracts of pomegranate peels, and tamarind seeds possess significant anthelmintic activities at day 1 and could be a potential alternative for management of gastrointestinal roundworm problem in lambs.

    Immunofluorescent and immunohistochemistry are pillars of modern diagnostic techniques, which are Antigen-Antibody complex basis. Both techniques are sensitive and highly specific to particular antigen. However, immunofluorescent differs from immunohistochemistry in many aspects. For example, tissue collection and preparation, chemical reactions, fluorescent microscope and/or confocal laser scanning microscope versus compound microscope. Furthermore, some sensitive tissues such as kidneys need to be collected and preparedly with different methods. The Antigen-Antibody complexes in kidney are destroyed by formalin solution, thus freshly kidneys are suggested. To summarize, pathologists who use Immunofluorescent and Immunohistochemistry for diagnosis should realize that the proper techniques of collecting and preparing specimen could lead to the accurate results.

    Effect of dietary fish oil supplement on nutrients digestibility and egg yolk omega-3 fatty acids contents in Japanese Quails

    This study were investigated the effects of dietary fish oil supplement on digestibility of nutrients, fatty acid composition of egg yolk and quality of eggs in Japanese quails. Three hundred and twenty, ten weeks old female Japanese quails were randomly divided into 2 treatments, replicated 8 cages with 20 birds per cage. Dietary treatments; control diet and fish oil supplement diet (added 6% fish oil) were fed for 30 days. Samples of diets, feces and egg were daily collected from last 5 days. For proximate analysis of fish oil supplement DM, EE and ash of feed intake were lower than control diet (P<0.01). Moreover, the dietary fish oil supplement on macronutrients digestibility revealed DM, ME (P<0.05) and ash were significantly decrease (P<0.01) and also found negative effect on nitrogen metabolism (P<0.05). Fish oil supplement had significantly negative effect on egg production, egg weight and yolk width (P<0.05). However, detected the increasing of saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 9 fatty acids contents of quails fed fish oil supplement diet (P<0.01). On the other hand, fish oil supplement diets were highly significant decrease in omega 6 fatty acids and omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acid ratio (P<0.01). In summary, dietary fish oil supplemented can caused positive effect on content of saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 9 fatty acids, but had adverse effect either macro-nutrients intake or their digestibility. Additionally dietary fish oil supplemented lead to lower omega 6 to omega 3 ratios that cloud be beneficial effect on human health.

    การเปรียบเทียบผลของ Bupivacaine Lidocaine and Xylazine สำหรับระงับความเจ็บปวด ระบบหัวใจและหลอดเลือด โดยวิธีการฉีดเข้าช่องไขสันหลังส่วน Lumbosacral ในวัวพันธุ์ผสมพื้นเมือง

    The objective of the research was to determine the onset, duration, analgesic, ataxic after doing lumbosacral epidural injection with bupivacaine, lidocaine or xylazine as an analgestic drug. Twelve adult crossbreed native cattle were assigned in three groups as a randomized, Completely Randomized Design. 0.5% bupivacaine hydrochloride (0.025 mg/kg) in group 1, 2% lidocaine hydrochloride without epinephrine (0.22 mg/kg) in group 2, 2% xylazine hydrochloride (0.05 mg/kg) in group 3, the cattle got the each drug by lumbosacral epidural injection at L6-S1 area with 0.5 ml/second on speed. The results of the onset time (bupivacaine = 5.5 ± 0.43 minutes, lidocaine = 5.75 ± 0.89 minutes, xylazine = 7.75 ± 1.43 minutes) were not significantly different in all analgesic drugs (p>0.05). The duration of the analgesic drugs also were not significantly different (p>0.05) : bupivacaine = 93.75 ± 31.09 minutes, lidocaine = 72.50 ± 9.76 minutes, xylazine = 169.0 ± 35.81 minutes. The parameter of heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and rumen contraction rate (RCR) in bupivacaine lidocaine or xylazine were significantly different in all analgesic drugs inspectively (p<0.05): HR (57.10 ± 3.98ab 65.25± 5.26a or 48.63 ± 2.80b bpm) RR (29.19 ± 2.89a 24.0 ± 1.63ab or 16.35 ± 2.02b bpm) RCR (2.63 ± 0.12a 1.60 ± 0.24b or 1.78 ± 0.33ab completely cycle per two minutes). The next surgery will choose the best data of analgesic drug for lumbosacral epidural injection in crossbreed native cattle.
