Lysiphyllum strychnifolium (W. G. Craib) A. Schmitz (syn. Bauhinia strychnifolia), Fabaceae, vernacularly known in Thai as “Ya-Nang-Daeng,” has been traditionally used for detoxification and longevity. A high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of four bioactive components, gallic acid, trilobatin, yanangdaengin, and astilbin, as chemical markers for leaves and stems of this medicinal plant, was developed and validated. The chromatographic separation was performed on a reversed-phase C-18 column using a gradient system of 0.5% acetic acid and methanol with a flow rate of 1 ml/min. The validated method showed good sensitivity, linearity, precision, and accuracy. The effect of solvent polarity on the yield of bioactive compounds was also studied. The gallic acid, trilobatin, and yanangdaengin contents of L. strychnifolium leaves as well as astilbin from its stems collected from different localities were analyzed. Chromatographic fingerprinting between each population indicated a homogeneity of L. strychnifolium in Thailand. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
