Institute for Population and Social ResearchIn this paper we review the rapidly changing field of historical demography, outlining how the field has advanced over the last seven decades or so, particularly with respect to methodologies, and pointing to the contributions the field has made to social history. Then we turn to the social and economic history of Siam and review what is known from existing studies of Siam's historical population trends. We indicate why demography is central to historical social change in Southeast Asia generally and in Siam in particular. In light of its importance in Siam's social and economic history, we consider why so little empirical historical demography has been carried out. Finally, we provide an overview of materials in the nation's historical collections that might provide a basis for an historical demography for Thailand.Publication Open Access Factors related to stunting status of the children aged under two years in Magway Township, Myanmar(2014) Su Wai Phyo; Boonyong Keiwkarnka; Aroonsri Mongkolchati; Mahidol University. ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentThis cross-sectional analytic study was carried out to determine factors related to stunting status of children aged under two years in Magway Township, Myanmar. Data were collected by using multi-stage cluster sampling and a total of 399 children aged under two years and their mothers were included in this study. After interviewing the mothers by using a face to face method, anthropometric measurements of the children and mothers were performed. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of independent variables, dependent variable, and stunting status of the children. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were applied to identify the factors related to the stunting status of children. The finding shows that nearly one-fourth of the under two years children (23.8%) were stunted. The result from multiple logistic regression showed that mother’s height (<145 cm), family income (<25 percentile/ <60$), child age (>10 months), gestational age of the child (<37 weeks) and early introducing of complementary food to the children (<6 months) were the predicting factors of the stunting status of the children in this population. Therefore, Maternal and Child Health Care Services, implementing various health education and intervention programs to the mothers and families focusing on quality antenatal care and an appropriate time for introducing complementary food should be addressed.Publication Open Access The utilization of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine for non-communicable diseases and mental disorders in health care patients in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam(2016) Peltzer, Karl; Supa Pengpid; Apa Puckpinyo; Siyan Yi; Le Vu Anh; Mahidol University. ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentBackground: The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) use in patients with chronic diseases in lower Mekong countries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a health care setting using a random sample of 4799 adult patients (Mean age: 52.3 years, SD = 22.7) with chronic diseases in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. The measure included the International Questionnaire to measure usage of complementary and alternative medicine (I-CAM). Results: The 1 year prevalence of consulting TCAM providers was 26.0 %; 27.0 % in Cambodia, 26.3 % in Thailand, 23.9 % in Vietnam. The most commonly consulted TCAM providers were the herbalist (17.3 %), massage therapist (6.0 %), and acupuncturist (5.5 %). For all different types of TCAM providers more than 80 % of participants perceived the consultation as very or somewhat helpful. The own use of herbal medicine was 41.0 %, own use of vitamins 26.5 % and the own use of other supplements 9.7 % in the past 12 months. The most common self-help practices in the past 12 months included praying for your own health (30.1 %), meditation (13.9 %) and relaxation techniques (9.9 %). In multivariate logistic regression analyses, older age, rural residence and having two or more chronic conditions was associated with the use a TCAM provider; being female, urban residence, residing in Vietnam and having two or more chronic conditions was associated with the use of TCAM products; and being female, older age, rural residence, higher formal education, and residing in Cambodia was associated with the use of TCAM self-help practices. Conclusions: TCAM use is common among chronic disease patients in lower Mekong countries and is associated with several sociodemographic and disease specific factors.
