Institute for Population and Social ResearchDelayed marriage is a global phenomenon, but in Thailand studies addressing this issue are limited . This study aims to analyze the factors associated with delayed marriage among Thai men and women in Kanchanaburi province .The analysis is based on a sample of 1,370 men and women aged 18-59 found in the Survey of Family and Household, 2010 .Chi-squared analysis reveals women are more sensitive to ‘modernization variables’ - education, occupation, economic status, migration experience, residential area, and attitudes towards marriage and divorce. This is confirmed by results of the logit model analysis which reveals that only age, occupation, and attitudes towards marriage have a weak- moderate effect on delayed marriage among men, whereas among women, all variables were found to be significant, with the exception of occupation. This result supports the idea that delayed marriage, particularly among women, is sensitive to modernization. It suggests that with continuing development more men and women could delay marriage. Delayed marriage could be an opportunity for more investment in human resource development aimed at preparing young adults for the family life.Publication Open Access ‘Hu Hong’ (bad thing): parental perceptions of teenagers’ sexuality in urban Vietnam(2017) Lan Anh Thi Do; Pimpawun Boonmongkon; Seung Chun Paek; Guadamuz, Thomas E.; Mahidol University. Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Department of Society and HealthBackground: Teenagers under 18 years old in Vietnam are considered as minors who usually lack the autonomy to make decisions. They are also sometimes viewed as contributors to social evils including crime, violence and substance use. Moreover, most Vietnamese teenagers have unsafe sex before marriage. The objective of this study is to explore the parental perceptions relating to their teenagers’ sexuality, particularly the social and cultural forces, that may hinder access to sexuality information. Methods: Guided by a Community Advisory Board (CAB), this qualitative study uses four focus group discussions (FGDs) consisting of 12 mothers and 12 fathers, as well as twelve individual in-depth interviews (IDIs) with a diverse sample of parents of teens in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Content and discourse analysis were conducted, based on Foucauldian concepts. Results: Four themes emerged: 1) Meanings of sexuality and sexuality education, 2) Early sexual intercourse destroys teenagers’ future, 3) Teenagers are not hu hong (spoil/bad thing), are innocent and virgin, and 4) Policing and controlling of sexual intercourse among teens. Parents did not view their teenage children as sexual beings; those who are sexual are considered hu hong. Parents believed that teens need to be policed and controlled to prevent them from becoming hu hong, particularly girls. Controlling of sexuality information by parents was therefore common in HCMC, but differed by gender and educational levels of parents. For example, fathers more than mothers were not comfortable teaching their teenage children about sex and sexuality. Parents with higher education police their teenage children’s usage of the Internet and social media, while parents with lower education control who can be friends with their teenage children. Conclusions: Vietnamese parents in general have negative views of sex and sexuality education for their teenage children. Recognizing that many Vietnamese teenagers have unsafe sex before marriage, parents need to change their perceptions and understand the importance of comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), which are included in UNESCO, UNFPA and UNICEF-developed CSE tools. โรงเรียนพยาบาลรามาธิบดีwith 5-point rating scales of newly graduated nurse’spractice ability were listed as a tool. ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentA cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to assess the performance of peer educators on HIV/AIDS prevention among high school students in Bangkok, Thailand. There were 157 students in this study and data were collected from eight schools in Bangkok. 50.96% of the peer educators had high performance for peer education on HIV/ AIDS prevention. More than 70% of them performed all kinds of roles for HIV/AIDS prevention. The role which they performed the most was to facilitate students to think about their ideas and attitudes (85.99%). Significant associations were found between performance of peer educators and duration of working, perception towards peer education, internal motivation, availability of resources including place, time, training courses and number of training courses attended, accessibility of resources including place, materials, budget and training courses, and social support. The results suggest the need to strategically start selecting and training peer educators from secondary level, to help them form their opinions about peer education, to apply criteria of internal motivation to selection of peer educators, to allocate more time to conduct their activities, to improve accessibility of budget and materials for them, and to strengthen social support for them in order to improve their performance.Publication Open Access Traversing the Laws: The Unregulated Movement of Filipino Migrants in Thailand(2014-01) Sarausad, Mary Rose Geraldine A.; Kritaya Archavanitkul; Mahidol University. Institute for Population and Social ResearchDespite policies that provide a legal framework for controlling foreign labor, Thailand continues to experience an increasing trend of both unskilled and skilled labor migrants from neighboring countries. This can be attributed primarily to labor and skills shortages in the country. For the last five years, Thailand has a growing stock of Filipino migrants, and a sizeable number of them are working without a proper work permit. This study investigates and sheds light on the trends in the movement of Filipinos working in Thailand. It focuses on factors facilitating their movement and the various resources employed by migrants to remain in the country. Findings from a survey of 354 Filipino migrants in various provinces and at the Thailand-Cambodia border, as well as from in-depth interviews with 25 migrants are presented. The findings reveal that most Filipino migrants are highly skilled and well educated, and that they tend to come from certain regions and ethnicities in the Philippines. New patterns of mobility and different paths enabling Filipinos to work and remain in Thailand are revealed; many migrants switch between regular and irregular status, taking advantage of various mechanisms and resources in the process.
