Abstract
This study is aimed at investigating the effect of oxidative stress on the development of Plasmodium falciparum in ?-thalassemia erythrocytes in vitro. P. falciparum cultured in erythrocytes from normal (n = 16), ?-thalassemia 1 trait (n = 20), ?-thalassemia 2 trait (n = 10), Hb CS trait (n = 8) was subjected to H(,2)O(,2), generated from the reaction of glucose-glucose oxidase. Results from experiments revealed that malaria parasite in ?-thalassemia 2 trait and Hb CS trait erythrocytes were more susceptible to H(,2)O(,2) than that in ?-thalassemia 1 trait which was not significantly different from normal erythrocyte. The reduction of parasite survival was more pronounced when the thalassemia sera were used.
