White; François Nosten; Mahidol University; Shoklo Malaria Research Uniton the north-western border of Thailand between 1993 and 1997. The development of Plasmodium vivax malaria was associated with a past mean haematocrit, > 30% (hazard ratio = 1.5, 95% CI 1.2-2, P = 0.001) and recent (≤ 30 d) iron and folate supplementation... (hazard ratio = 1.7, 95% CI 1.1-2.6, P= 0.01). There were no associations with P. falciparum infections. Plasmodium vivax has a predilection for young erythrocytes, and these results suggest that pregnant women with larger numbers of circulating young redPublication Metadata only A randomized comparison of oral chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine for the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Laos(2003-05-01) Mayfong Mayxay; Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh; Samlane Phompida; Paul N. Newton; Maniphone Khanthavong; Bouakham Vannachone; Alan Brockman; Nicholas J. White; National University of Laos; Mahosot Hospital; Parasitology and Entomology; John Radcliffe Hospital; Mahidol University; Shoklo Malaria Research UnitBetween June and October 2000 we conducted the first randomized trial in Laos comparing chloroquine (CQ) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) in the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria (n = 29, 42-d follow-up, age > 5 years...). The proportion of patients with treatment failure was high (CQ = 78%, RIII 46%; SP = 36%, RIII 15%). The treatment policy for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in Laos needs to be reviewed urgently. © 2003 Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.Publication Metadata only Activation of the coagulation cascade in patients with leptospirosis(2008-01-15) Wirongrong Chierakul; Panatsaya Tientadakul; Yupin Suputtamongkol; Vanaporn Wuthiekanun; Kriangsak Phimda; Roongrueng Limpaiboon; Nisarat Opartkiattikul; Nicholas J. Nearly one-half of patients with leptospirosis had overt DIC as defined by an International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis DIC score. Conclusions. Activation of the coagulation system... is an important feature of leptospirosis. Thrombocytopenia is an indicator of severe disease and risk of bleeding. © 2007 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. The safety and efficacy of artesunate-dapsone-proguanil (artesunate 4 mg/kg, dapsone 2.5 mg/kg, proguanil 8 mg/kg daily for three days), was studied... considerably augments the anti-malarial activity of the biguanide-dapsone combination, but this is insufficient for infections with parasites carrying the highly antifol-resistant Pfdhfr I164L mutation. © 2004 Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and HygienePublication Metadata only Prospective evaluation of a rapid immunochromogenic cassette test for the diagnosis of melioidosis in northeast Thailand(2006-01-01) Allen C. In four isolates of P. falciparum, the median (range) PfHRP2 content was 2.0 fg (0.5-4.3 fg) for a young ring stage infected erythrocyte, and 5.4 fg (2.1-10.2 fg) for the schizont stage. The amount of PfHRP2... in the parasitized erythrocyte increased most during development to the mature trophozoite stage. The median (range) amount of PfHRP2 secreted per parasite per entire erythrocytic cycle was 5.2 fg (1.1-13.0 fg). A median of 89% of the total PfHRP2 was excreted
