Factors affecting computer game addiction and mental health of male adolescents in Mueang District, Si Sa Ket Province
    (2008) Supaket, P; Munsawaengsub, C; Chokchai Munsawaengsub; Nanthamongkolchai, S; Sutham Nanthamongkolchai; Apinuntavech, S; โชคชัย หมั่นแสวงทรัพย์; สุธรรม นันทมงคลชัย
This survey research aimed to study the factors affecting computer game addiction, mental health status, and the association of computer game addiction with the mental health of male adolescents in Mueang District, Si Sa Ket Province. The samples were 333 Mathayomsuksa One to Three students in Si Sa Ket municipal school selected by stratified random sampling to classify the schools and the grade. Data were collected by self administered questionnaires and Thai General Health Questionnaire 28 (Thai GHQ 28) during August 28, 2007 to September 28, 2007 and analyzed by frequency, percentage, means, Chi-square test and Multiple logistic regression. The study found that 23.1% of the adolescents were computer game addicted and 76.9% were not. The factors with a statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) effect on the computer game addicted were the availability of Internet-connected PCs in house and the inclination of friends. Those adolescents with home internet had a 2.3 times higher chance of being addicted than those without home internet and those with higher friend inclination had a 2.2 times higher chance of being addicted than those with lower friend inclination. On the mental health status of the male adolescents, the study revealed that 61.0% of adolescents who were addicted had poor mental health and computer game addiction was associated with weakened mental health status; a higher proportion of those who were addicted had poor mental health than those who were not addicted. The study suggests that the family should set up the computer in a common room so that the parents can observe and participate; in order to interrupt their children from playing unwholesome games. The family should make friends with their child’s peer group and be familiar with them in order to suggest and observe the game content to help preventing computer game addiction in their child.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of copper alloy for dental application. Materials and methods: Three types of copper alloy used in Thailand were selected (Cu-Al, Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Zn). Ingots of these three alloys were prepared. The tensile test and potentiodynamic polarization for corrosion test were performed following ISO 1562: 2004 Dentistry-Casting gold alloys and ISO 10271: 2001 Dental metallic materials-Corrosion test method. The ultimate strength, 0.2% proof stress, percentage of elongation after fracture and modulus of elasticity were calculated from tensile stress-strain curves. Six specimens for each test were made from each alloy. Results: The percentage of elongation of Cu-Al, Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Zn alloys were not significantly different (48.6, 52.1, and 53.3 percent, respectively). The proof stress of Cu-Al and Cu-Al-Ni alloys (88.5 and 72.1 MPa, respectively) were not significantly different, while that of Cu-Zn alloy (38.9 MPa) was the lowest. The ultimate tensile strength of Cu-Al alloy was significantly the highest (321.9 MPa), while that of Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Zn alloys (207.1 and 215.9 MPa, respectively) were not significantly different. The modulus of elasticity of Cu-Al alloy was significantly the highest (122.9 GPa), while that of Cu-Al-Ni and Cu-Zn alloys (97.9, and 102.3 GPa) were not significantly different. The potentiodynamic curve of Cu-Zn alloy had no passive region, while the curve of Cu-Al alloy had a shorter passive region than that of the Cu-Al-Ni alloy. Conclusion: Regarding mechanical properties, Cu-Al alloy seemed the most suitable for post and core materials while Cu-Al-Ni alloy had the highest corrosion resistance. Thus, both Cu-Al and Cu-Al-Ni alloys showed promising properties for further development as appropriate post-and-core materials.

Unwilling and unwitting: problems of the Thai construction workers dealing with the newly emergent risk of nanomaterials
(2011-01) Thanate Kitisriworaphan; Yothin Sawangdee; Wimontip Musikaphan; Mahidol University. Institute for Population and Social Research; Mahidol University. National Institute for Child and Family Development
The construction sector is one of the major factors of economic growth in Thailand. As an industry, it provides an alternative career for almost 2 million seasonal migrants from the agricultural sector. Unfortunately, unskilled construction workers are one of the most neglected groups in Thai society, frequently assigned to work in high-risk, unsafe working conditions. They have neither the knowledge nor the bargaining power to prevent this. This research aims to investigate the level of knowledge among construction workers on health risks posed by engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) contained in construction products such as tile grout and paint. Most ENPs are recognised by both scholars and international organisations as new carcinogenic agents, but the public still has little knowledge and even less awareness of this problem. This study conducted a survey of 1,055 construction workers in Bangkok, and the Northeast, North and Central regions of Thailand in order to reveal the level of existing knowledge of this newly emergent health risk. The findings from this study highlight a low existing knowledge of the health risks presented from daily usage of construction nanotech products among workers. However, the exposure level is rarely high. Analysis of the determinants of risk exposure reveals that age, work experience, work position and size of firm determine potential exposure of worker on health risk from ENPs.

Thai government is improving public health service systems for better quality and efficiency by upgrading health centers to sub-district health promoting hospitals (SHPH). Healthcare service for older persons must be holistic service combining services for consistency with the needs and problems faced by older persons. This study aimed to investigate community care models of SHPH for older persons in order to manage and provide sustainable care for older persons by using limited resources with quality. The study was using design as mixed method. Quantitative data were obtained via questionnaire from 104 healthcare providers for older persons of each SHPH who had worked more than one year and were selected by stratified sampling from all thirteen districts of Kanchanaburi Province. The qualitative data were collected from four focus groups of purposive key informants. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and content analysis. The model was examined by a consensus of persons involved in the local public hearing. The results revealed the model called the community care model“SHPH for Older Persons” consist of collaborative work by four organizations from the government sector with agencies responsible for providing care for older persons. Every sector must set six strategies and ten factors of success to support SHPH operations in order to provide holistic care for every older persons. The importance of care, family members and communities must be willing to volunteer and participate in providing community care for older persons. The results suggest that The government should set policies and support SHPH, local administrative organizations including related agencies to build community strength in providing care for older persons by developing the knowledge of community leaders, enhancing volunteer capacity, enable linkages in the work of every sector to arrange strong elderly service systems in communities.
