ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentThe breast cancer incidence rate is highest among women in Thailand. Monthly breast self-examination (BSE) which is simple, inexpensive and effective to detect breast cancer is recommended for every woman as the first step for early detection. Therefore, cross-sectional study was conducted to identify factors associated with monthly BSE among Thai women aged 20 years old and over in Samut Songkhram Province, Thailand. Data collection procedure was carried out from April to May, 2017. A sample of 405 women was selected by multi-stage cluster sampling to participate to face to face interviews. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were used to examine association between independent variables and monthly BSE. The results of this study showed that only 18.8% of women reported doing monthly BSE while 47.2% never practised BSE. In Chi-square test, variables significantly associated with monthly BSE were family income, health insurance situation, breast cancer knowledge, BSE knowledge, health motivation, BSE training experiences, and mammography experiences. After adjusting for other factors in the multiple logistic regression model, breast cancer knowledge (Adj OR= 3.85; 95% CI= 1.95-7.62), BSE knowledge (Adj OR= 7.31; 95% CI= 2.98-17.93), health motivation (Adj OR= 2.10; 95% CI= 1.14-3.39) and BSE training experiences (Adj OR= 2.85; 95% CI= 1.48-5.49) remained significantly associated with monthly BSE. These findings suggest that providing BSE training to the women is the key in promoting monthly BSE. Therefore, promoting effective BSE training to increase their knowledge about BSE and breast cancer will result in a widespread of monthly BSE among women.Publication Open Access Factors influencing the performance of village health posts in Kalasin Province, Thailand(2019) Bunpode Suwannachat; Jiraporn Chompikul; Aroonsri Mongkolchati; Boonyong Keiwkarnka; บรรพจน์ สุวรรณชาติ; จิราพร ชมพิกุล; อรุณศรี มงคลชาติ; บุญยง เกี่ยวการค้า; Mahidol University. ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentA descriptive study was conducted to identify factors influencing the performance of village health posts (VHPs) at Kalasin province, Thailand. Stratified sampling was used to randomly select a sample of 92 VHPs which responded to the structured... questionnaires. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were used to examine associations between independent variables and the performance of VHPs. The response rate was 74.2%. Thirty-five VHPs (38 %) were categorized into the high levelPublication Open Access Determinants of cervical cancer screening among migrants in the Northern district of Yangon, Myanmar(2015) Chaw Su Nandar; Jiraporn Chompikul; Orapin Laosee; Mahidol University. ASEAN Institute for Health DevelopmentA cross-sectional study was designed to identify factors affecting cervical cancer screening of migrant women aged 30-49 years in the Northern district of Yangon. Multi-stage cluster sampling was used to ran- domly select 666 respondents. They were face to face interviewed by six trained interviewers after obtaining informed consent during April and May 2015. Chi–square tests and multiple logistic regression were used to examine associations between independent variables and cervical cancer screening. The prevalence of cervical cancer screening among migrants in the previous 3 year was 19.1%. Cervical cancer screening was found to be significantly associated with marital status, family history of cervical cancer, knowledge, affordability for extra pay to get screening, providers’ rapid response, waiting time, sources of information and encouraging support, and perception regarding perceived threats, benefits, barriers and cues to actions. After adjusting for age, family history of cervical cancer, and other factors in the model, perceived barriers (Adj OR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1. 45-4.04) and knowledge levels (Adj OR = 2.21, 95% CI = 1.40-3.47) remained significant predictors of cervical cancer screening uptake. Migrants with positive perceived barriers for cervical cancer screening were 2.42 times more likely to uptake screening than those with negative perception. Migrants with good knowledge about cervical cancer screening were 2.21 times more likely to have cervical cancer screening than those with poor knowledge. The findings of this study suggested that free of charge for VIA testing should be promoted for the whole country. Health education programs should be provided to migrants to increase knowledge and positive perception about cervical cancer screening services which will lead to a greater uptake in screening.Publication Open Access Factors related to the Acceptance of the New Antenatal Care Protocol among the Health Personnel in Suphan Buri Province, Thailand(2007) Trin Tuyet Anh; Sirikul Isaranuruk; Jiraporn Chompikul; Mahidol University. In March, 2012, 275 male adolescents were recruited in this study and the data were collected by using structured questionnaires. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were used to examine factors associated with tobacco use. The results showed that the prevalence of tobacco use was 49%. Among the users, 94.1% were smokelesstobacco users and 65.4% were smokers and 65.4% were dual users. The median age of the respondents was 20 years and the majority were 18-20 years. Only 1.1% had good knowledge concerning risk of tobacco use. Father education, father smoking habit, presence of friends using tobacco, receiving tobacco advertise-ments from company and media and parental monitoring were significant predictors of tobacco use among male adolescents. Male adolescents who have friends using tobacco were 9 times more likely to use tobacco while adjusting the other factors. The study conducted that tobacco use among male adolescents shows no sign of decreasing. Interventions such as health promotion training for the adolescents together with their friends about the harmful effect of tobacco use should be promoted at the school level. Advertising campaigns against tobacco use are also needed to be strengthened to promote behavioral change within the specific age group and gender.Publication Open Access Prevalence and associated factors of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Pan-Ta-Naw township, Myanmar(2015) Wai Lynn Kyi; Aroonsri Mongkolchati; Jiraporn Chompikul; Somsak Wongsawass; Mahidol University.
